Baraboo School District E-Newsletter
October 1, 2020
Face Coverings Required
Governor Evers' mask mandate has been extended until Nov. 21, 2020. The School District of Baraboo would like to remind our families that per school district policy, face coverings will continue to be required while on school premises after Nov. 21, 2020, and until further notice.

The District is requiring face coverings for students 5-years of age and older while on school premises. We ask that parents/guardians also wear face coverings while on school property when dropping off or picking up students.

Please note, the District is currently using the following definition of "face covering:"
"Face Covering" means a piece of cloth or other material that is worn to cover the nose and mouth completely. A "face covering" includes but is not limited to a bandana, a cloth face mask, a disposable or paper mask, a neck gaiter, or a religious face covering. A "face covering" does not include face shields, mesh masks, masks with holes or openings, or masks with vents.

Below is the District's Face Covering Response Protocol for elementary and secondary students. Click here for a printable version of this protocol. Thank you for working with the District to provide a safe environment for our students to be engaged, challenged and inspired!
BSD COVID-19 Dashboard
The School District of Baraboo has created a  COVID-19 Dashboard (click to view) to provide our families with information on the state of the COVID-19 virus in our District and how this data impacts decision-making for school/classroom closures.

The District will update the number of confirmed cases, recovered cases and active cases in the District, as well as the percentage of students and staff who are currently absent from school with COVID-like symptoms or quarantined due to possible exposure. This information will be updated weekly on Mondays, unless there is a drastic change in which case the District will notify families via Infinite Campus.

As of Sept. 28, 2020, our numbers are as follows:

The District Dashboard provides information about the results of COVID-19 reported by Sauk County Public Health (SCPH).

Please note that due to our obligation to protect student and staff confidentiality, we cannot share details about these cases. Identifying staff and students by grade level or classroom jeopardizes our ability to keep this information confidential. If members of our school community feel we are not doing our best to keep personal information confidential, we run the risk of families no longer sharing important health information with us. We need accurate data to make the best decisions for our students, staff and community.

District-wide communications will be added to the right-hand side of the Dashboard by the date they were sent. Communications sent to individual families, classrooms, grade levels, or buildings will not be added to the Dashboard as those communications are specific to the individuals who receive them. An example of this is a COVID low-risk exposure letter (see link for example), which is sent if an individual tests positive for COVID and attends school/school events while infected. This type of letter will be sent through Infinite Campus to parents/guardians of identified students in shared spaces/classrooms or an entire school population who are not deemed close contacts.

The COVID-19 Dashboard will also host links on the right-hand side to help your family stay current on District policies and procedures, including the Student/School Staff Symptoms and Exposure Protocol, the District Face Covering Response Protocol, and the Sauk County Public Health - School COVID-19 Protocol.

Student Collaboration Continues in Classrooms
The School District of Baraboo has put many safety measures in place for the 2020-21 school year, including requiring face coverings, social distancing, rerouting foot traffic, and staggered dismissal times.

Pictured are East Elementary students in Ms. Pavlue's 5th grade class working in small groups, made possible by the use of plexiglass dividers!

NF Students Play with Math
Mrs. Shafer's 5th graders at North Freedom Elementary have been learning about area and volume using math cubes, so she extended a challenge to them...see how many different rectangular prisms you can create with only 24 cubes. Students worked frantically to find as many combinations as they could. Shhh, don't tell them they were doing math!

The Winner of the 2020 Homecoming Powder Buff Game Is...
It's Homecoming Week!

On Sunday night Baraboo High School students met for the annual Powder Buff game as part of Homecoming 2020. Though spectators weren't allowed this year and all players and their coaches had to remain masked at all times, competition remained fierce right up until the final showdown between the Freshmen class and the Senior class!

The winners of the 2020 Powder Buff games? THE SENIORS! Congratulations Class of 2021!

GLW Buddy Classes Meet Virtually
Ms. Harbort's first graders at Gordon L. Willson Elementary met virtually with their buddy class, the fifth graders in Ms. Grogan's classroom, on Sept. 25.

The fifth graders used this opportunity to help the first graders become more familiar with Google Meet, a video-communication service.

The two classrooms meet periodically every year to give the younger students and opportunity to learn from the older students and to give the older students the opportunity to model for the younger students. This year, the classes will meet virtually through Google Meets!

JYMS Students Head Outdoors for Silent Reading
On Thursday Ms. Wedig's 7th grade English Language Arts at Jack Young Middle School class took their 20 minute silent reading time outdoors. Students were given the option to sit separately and have a face covering break or to sit together with face coverings in place.

Reminder: Wash Your Face Coverings!
In-person families, please remember to wash cloth masks and other face coverings regularly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following for how to wash face coverings.
Washing machine
  • You can include your cloth face covering with your regular laundry.
  • Use regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the face covering.
Washing by hand
  • Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products, such as those designed for safe use on colored clothing, may not be suitable for disinfection.
    • Use bleach containing 5.25%-8.25% sodium hypochlorite. Do not use a bleach product if the percentage is not in this range or is not specified.
    • Ensure the bleach product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
    • Ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
    • 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per gallon of room temperature water or
    • 4 teaspoons of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per quart of room temperature water
  • Soak the mask in the bleach solution for 5 minutes.
  • Discard the bleach solution down the drain and rinse the mask thoroughly with cool or room temperature water.
  • Make sure to completely dry the mask after washing.

Friday Folders Are Going Virtual
The School District of Baraboo's Friday Folders are going virtual for the 2020-21 school year!

Information from non-district entities, like club sports, library programming, parks and rec information, etc., can now be accessed in a digital Friday Folder by clicking here. Friday Folder submissions from previous weeks will be archived in this folder as well, so if you want to reference it you can go to that week's folder and view it again!

This is a safety measure for in-person students to limit the number of papers received from outside sources, and will allow students who are attending school via the Virtual Learning Model to access to the information.

Please note: Important school-related information directly from the School District of Baraboo will still come home in Friday Folders, and virtual teachers will provide this information directly to their students.
