CALLING ALL USHERS, GREETERS & THOSE INTERESTED IN SUNDAY MORNING SAFETY PLANS
Sunday, August 18th at 9:30 am

We will hold a brief workshop on Sunday morning safety on August 18 between services. Pastor Deb will bring some guidelines, based on Red Cross standards, we plan to be using moving forward. {The Trustees and the Administrative Council have been part of this work.} Ushers, greeters and anyone else interested are encouraged to attend.

|
As a ministry, we provide a small collection of basic medical equipment needs for loan -- canes, walkers, potty/bath chairs, ice machine, crutches. Let us know if you might have a need in this area. {Also, we are also looking for a second pair of crutches}. Thanks to Marcia Loomis for being the current coordinator of this ministry.

DETENTION CENTER - CALL TO ACTION
|
|
To Our Church Family:
Members of the Church & Society Team at UMCE have been nudged by God to take action regarding the current situation within our country's detention centers. The most recent report issued by the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security on July 2nd, confirmed the conditions that have been cited in the news lately. (See

The conditions at the detention centers have become a humanitarian crisis.
UMCJustice.org shares: "As United Methodists, we believe that God has given us principles for how to live in a community. Central to Jesus' teachings, life, death, and resurrection is the Great Commandment: we must love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. (Matthew 22:35-40; Mark 12:28-34)
Much of the Bible is devoted to figuring out how to follow this commandment.
...We believe that in loving both God and neighbor, we must pursue God's command of justice, liberation and flourishing for all people. We must work for the civil and human rights of every person. "
We believe that children fleeing violence and poverty who are seeking asylum should be united with their families and sponsors while they await hearings on their cases, not taken away and imprisoned. But today, the U.S. government is holding thousands of children in detention centers across the country - and that number keeps growing."
Apart from being harmful to children, these policies are immoral and contrary to our Gospel mandate. The United Methodist Church has spoken out against them. It says, "We oppose immigration policies that separate family members from each other or that include detention of families with children." (
Social Principles, ¶162.H
)
Because of our faith, The United Methodist Church calls for an immigration system that is rooted in the inherent worth, dignity, value and human rights of migrants. We advocate for the "elimination of indefinite detention, [and the] incarceration of children." (
Book of Resolutions, 3281
)" - www.umcjustice.org.
As such, we are encouraging members of our church family to let their voices, together with other United Methodists, be heard by those who can make a difference - our president and our representatives in Congress. UMCjustice.org has made this very easy to do. FIRST ANNUAL GAGA BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
|
Following a wonderful pot-luck, 35 kids, youth & adults gathered at our new gaga ball court for several rounds of gaga ball on July 28th. Thanks to referees Ann & Jack Thomas for keeping everyone "in line". As the division brackets moved forward, division champs were Alex Foster {kid's division}, Quinn York {youth division}, and Debbie Roamer {adult division}. Debbie was crowned the overall champion and awarded the grand gaga ball "trophy". Pastor Deb showed her mettle in the adult rounds, and special kudos for 7-year-old Ali Thomas for making it to the finals in the kid's division {power and finesse comes in small packages}. Thanks to tournament coordinator Sarah Sailor for putting this fun event together.

I want to thank everyone that joined in helping, baking/buying delicious goodies, bidding and donating the outstanding silent auction items, our car show entries, musicians, great food from VFW of Central City, and of course our wonderful vendors. I could not miss Gayla & Clyde that make sure all is in perfect condition for those who see our church for the first time and then when it's all over, it's perfect for you on Sunday again. (well maybe not the choir room)! A thank you to our favorite "on site doc" Terry & to our 1st
responders! Thanks also to our neighbors, that let us use their parking areas.
I cannot thank Dotty Mount enough. Without her there would have been no silent auction and she did a marvelous job with the help of Ruthanne.
Debby Humphrey Bake Sale Extraordinaire, who does so much more than ever asked for. Her team for the day Steph, Janice & Alice. Nice work ladies.
Jan Thurling for coming in and organizing/pricing the church sale items on Friday with the rest of us (she was the only calm one around)!
Jan Brown who donated the professional signage. She stepped in at the time I was having a melt down. Thank you, Jan.
Gayla for spending so much of her valuable personal hours making those eye catching banners, only to have them disappear. Thank you for all the hours.
Pastor Deb for supporting our efforts in every way. This made decisions easy.
Allison for calling, emailing, recording vendors and payments each day!
Vickie & the two Mikes!!! What a wonderful Car Show you put on. It was over the top! So great to work with this lady.
Then there's my partner in crime, the "drama queen for the day" Orpha! She was willing to listen to ideas, take off to a vendor show with me to pass out info for us, and was at the end of many emails! Orpha will tell you, I'm not the easiest person to be around when there's a fundraiser do! But she held together with me till the end! Well, almost. Thank you Orpha, I could not have done it without you.
Thanks to all those in the background that helped immensely. There's not enough room to name you all. Just know you are very appreciated! Thanks Dave, he put up with a lot in the last couple of months!!

ALL CHURCH WOMEN'S LUNCH

Please join us for an All Church Women's lunch on Wednesday, August 14th at 12:00 pm. We will meet
at Carolyn Hohne's home which is located at 269 Crest Drive, Idaho Springs, CO 80452.
We will meet at the church to carpool at 11:15 am. Please sign up on the Fellowship Hall list and indicate if you want to carpool and what food item you will bring.
Anyone who would like to hike the St. Mary's Glacier trail should meet at Carolyn's house at 9:00 am. This will allow a nice, slow, leisurely pace. The trail (3/4 mile - 1.5 miles round trip) is considered an easy hike, but it gains quite a bit of elevation in that short distance (400ft). Carolyn promises to take LOTS of breaks to catch your breath on the way up (it's over 10,000ft). The hike down is easy! You will be rewarded with a BEAUTIFUL mountain lake.....the ability to touch snow (if you want to)......a nice down-valley view of Mt. Evans and other mountain ranges...and the satisfaction that "you did it!". Anyone hiking should consider hiking shoes or good sturdy sneakers and bring water.

Lanelle and Mari moved into their new home yesterday and we
couldn't be happier for them! Lanelle has committed to staying engaged with Family Promise in our Home Program. This continued support will allow Lanelle to properly heal from a much needed surgery that had been delayed for several months due to their housing instability. We could not be more excited for this little family as they
transition from surviving to thriving. We are grateful to walk alongside them as they continue to work on their goals.

ECHO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM
|
|
|
UMCE has been given the privilege again this year to prepare meals for the EChO clients and volunteers the last week in June, July and August. Our remaining dates will be July 22 & 24 and August 26 & 29.
Last year we prepared food for approximately 400 people during the summer months, and received very sincere appreciation from EChO. The ECho lunch program was started in 2010, and since then five area churches have been taking part in this program from September through May. Last year was the first time the lunch program was continued during the summer months. For some people, this is the only meal they might receive that day.
If you would like to donate the needed groceries for this cause, please mark your contribution for the EChO Summer Lunch Program. If you have any questions, please contact Ruthanne Huber at 303-870-7322.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Recognizing Limitations
A man was bothered by continual ringing in his ears, bulging eyes, and a flushed face. Over a period of three years he went to one doctor after another. One took out his tonsils, one removed his appendix, another pulled all his teeth. He even tried a goat-gland treatment in Switzerland - all to no avail. Finally, one doctor told him there was no hope - he had six months to live.
The poor fellow quit his job, sold all his belongings and decided to live it up in the time he had left. He went to his tailor and ordered several suits and shirts.
The tailor measured his neck and wrote down "16 ½". The man corrected him, "It's 15 ½". The tailor measured again: "16 ½". But the man insisted that he'd always worn a size 15 ½ .
"Well, all right," said the tailor. "Just don't come back here complaining if you have ringing ears, bulging eyes and a flushed face!"
