September 13 Board Meeting Highlights
SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, September 13, 2018 regular meeting. 

The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • 2018-19 District Goals
  • Special Education Task Force - Update on Structure and Timeline
  • Summer School Update  
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

September 19 Documentary Screening: THE S WORD

Join us on September 19 for a screening of "THE S WORD," a groundbreaking documentar y that shatters the silence around suicide and reveals a movement of survivors, artists and activists fighting to change how we deal with our ultimate taboo.
 
The screening will take place on Wednesday, September 19 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. The screening will start at 6:30 p.m. and food will be provided from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. outside the PAC.  




This event is s ponsored by Star Vista, San Mateo High School, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services of San Mateo County and supported through the SMUHSD Wellness/Counseling Programs.
Capuchino Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Science Building

More than 150 people attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for Capuchino's new Science Building on September 6.

The building features seven state-of-the-art classrooms giving Capuchino's students access to the latest equipment and technology for 21st century learning.

Attendees had the opportunity to tour the building and watch as science teachers showcase some of the building's features and provide interactive demonstrations.

Caroline Berube with her mural


With the support of her art teacher, Julie Stock, Caroline Berube (SMHS class of 2018) unveiled her mural "United We Stand" on August 31. 

Caroline painted the hands of 61 of her immigrant school mates with the flags of their countries of origin and then "stamped" them onto the canvas to convey her feelings of advocacy and the need for social justice. 

Caroline will enjoy a gap year before heading off to Lewis and Clark where she plans to major in Latin American Studies.

5th Annual Transition Fair is October 20

Join the community on Saturday, October 20 for the  5th annual Stepping Up Transition to Independence Fair. 

Learn about programs and services available to students who have aged out or graduated from school-based special education programs. 

This once a year event brings together 40 agencies that provide  higher education job training, employment day programs living options , and  health services  to adults with disabilities.

The event will also feature 8-10  workshops  ranging from  benefits counseling advocacy healthcare employment college preparedness  and  assistive technology . Cover band The Advocates will be performing again this year.

This fair is free and open to everyone in San Mateo County. 



San Mateo Union High School District is one of many agencies contributing to this countywide collaboration.
Awards and Recognition
Capuchino High School Drum Majors Recognized

Congratulations to CHS Drum Majors Cisco Consolacion and Alannah Linden for not only being selected for the "Contention for the Top Award" but also for being recognized as "All American" where only four people were awarded.
 
The students were recognized at the USA Drum Major Camp in Fresno in early August. Their hard work and leadership skills show a great future for the Capuchino Band.
 
Additionally, Cisco was the only person in camp to be awarded "Most Distinguished Drum Major."
 
Mills Honored for Conservation Efforts

Mills High School was recognized at its first rally of the school year for saving more energy than any other site across the San Mateo Union High School District this past school year. 

The award was based on the district's analysis of energy usage from month-to-month during the last school year.

The school saved over 260,000 kilowatts of electricity saving the district over $75,000. District wide, conservation efforts saved SMUHSD $400,000 in energy costs.
