TouchUps weekly
Greetings!, this is your newsletter for May 6, 2020
Membership Milestone

We passed the 600 member level last week—a noteworthy milestone. Current membership stands at 603.

We have seen an unprecedented number of new members join our Guild since early December along with a fairly high existing member retention rate.
The Journal

The Journal is on its way to you. It has been an unusually long print process this time. Actually we are lucky to have it printed/mailed at all given the essential vs non-essential business situation we are in. You should receive your copy in the next week or two.

And a big thank you to the ~30 contributors who made this issue possible.

Register for “Morning with a Plane Maker”

We are pleased that Dan Schwank, owner of Red Rose Reproductions, will join us Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. to talk all things wooden planes and custom-made tools.

As with the successful virtual program with Patrick Edwards this past Saturday, we will have a presentation followed by a Question and Answer session. This one will run about two hours and be on the “GoToMeeting” platform. There is no charge to use GoToMeeting or to join the meeting. Instructions will be included in email after you register.

Dan struck out on his own in 2017 after years as a Tool & Die Maker to open “Red Rose Reproductions.” Some of you may remember that in 2018, he supplied custom, tapered and radiused blades and beech blanks to many members when we did our reproduction, Dutch hand-plane series.

Dan will explain his journey into tool-making. Then he will show and discuss some of the molding planes he makes. Many of these are based on successful British designs. To get a flavor of the planes and other tools he makes regularly in his Illinois shop click here.

You can read more about Dan and see his fine tools at Red Rose Reproductions.
Virtual Online Meetings
The Guild has conducted a number of virtual online meetings over the past few weeks. Some have been experimental and others more traditional. Recently, the Hand Tools & Carving subgroup even had a demonstrator located in California.

It is unclear how long or how frequently these type of meetings will continue before we get back to physical meetings. Some may continue long term as we explore different types of meetings such as guided discussion groups.

Please indicate your interest in this simple Yes/No poll.

New Videos Added to Our Library

Guild library videos are a long standing tradition with the Guild. What began as a lending library documenting many Guild demonstrations and lectures at general meetings, subgroup meetings and symposia presentations, was eventually converted from VHS tapes to DVD format and later available on our website.

We have two new videos from our recent foray into video conferencing.

More will be added as they are developed in the coming weeks.
Hands-On CAD
with Bruce Wedlock

This class in Hands-On CAD is an online meeting designed to teach the essentials of 3D modeling for woodworkers. Students will download a free demo version of the software Argon to enable them to do exercises and practice. The live online classroom sessions will be recorded so they can be reviewed at one’s convenience.

Learning CAD software programs requires a substantial investment of time. This demo version of Argon will not allow saving, printing or exporting drawings, but will allow you to create drawings with no time limit on usage. Basic drawings created in class will be available for you to upload and work on. Should you decide to acquire the software, the cost for retired, non-commercial use is $525. This is a fixed fee, not a subscription.

Instruction will involve learning the CAD operations and their vocabulary to create a solid model like learning the steps in the shop to create the real thing. We will start with creating a table with increasing complication like dovetailed drawers, tapered legs, reeded legs and turned spindles.

We will start with one class a week, date to be determined. You will have homework assignments for your practice. If you wish to participate, send Bruce Wedlock an email at wedlock@alum.mit.edu, and you will receive the download instructions. You will need either at PC or Mac to run this software.
