Sonja Jensen, SLU Public Interest Corp
Organization : St. Lawrence University ’19 – Sociology & Francophone Studies double major/African Studies minor

Town of residence : Binghamton, NY

Role at GardenShare : St. Lawrence University Public Interest Corps (SLU PIC) Summer Intern

How long : From June through August 2

What drew you to GardenShare?  The ability to help create sustainable, long-lasting change by strengthening the local food system.

What do you hope to accomplish while at GardenShare?   Meeting great people and cataloging all the summer feeding options in St. Lawrence Co.

Hobbies : Food Shopping – I could spend many happy hours wandering the aisles of any kind of grocery store! I love to cook, bake, and just experiment in the kitchen, so finding new ingredients is always exciting to me. If you ever see me around, I will always be down to chat about all things food.

Most recent accomplishment : Graduating from St. Lawrence University!

Last read? An Other Kingdom: Departing Consumer Culture by Block, Brueggemann, and McKnight

If you were a superhero, what would your power be? : The ability to freeze time or to never get tired. There aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that I want to get done.

Share something about yourself that few people know? : I am an ice cream fanatic! In the summer of 2015 – the summer before I arrived in the North Country for the first time – I tried all 64 flavors of ice cream at my local ice cream parlor. If you ever go to Suzy Q’s in Binghamton, NY, try to find my photo!

If you could have dinner with anyone, fictional, real, living or dead, who would it be and why?  Jacques Pépin – I had to do a report on him in high school and he quickly became one of my favorite chefs. He just has such a calming presence in the kitchen and he exudes love and passion for cooking. I’ve learned so many things from watching his shows and reading his books, I would love to thank him for continuing to inspire my love of French food and cooking and motivating me to actually learn good techniques in the kitchen.

What would I find in your refrigerator right now? : I just moved into my house for the summer so my fridge is pretty bare but I’m pretty sure I have:

-           Baby Spinach
-           A few parsnips from Birdsfoot Farm
-           2 containers of hummus
-           Fiddle heads
-           4 apricots
-           Leftover Vegetable Lo Mein from A-1
-           A few small zucchinis
-           3 bell peppers
-           Green grapes
-           Earth Balance Butter (for vegan baking)

If anyone has any recipe suggestions, please let me know!

GardenShare seeks nominations for Growing Community Award
The Growing Community Award is presented annually to recognize an individual or organization whose efforts strengthen food security in Northern New York State.

GardenShare is currently seeking nominations for the 2019 award, to be presented in October. Nominations are due by July 3, 2019. Visit GardenShare to view past recipients and access the online nomination form.
Volunteer Opportunities
Are you a farmers market regular in Canton, Gouverneur, Massena or Potsdam? Do you have some time over the summer to help out at the markets (see schedules below)? We are looking to build a team of volunteers who can help out for several hours on market days, perhaps several times over the course of the summer.

Volunteers will be trained by GardenShare staff to run the EBT device (electronic benefits transfer allows customers to use their SNAP benefits, debit and credit cards to buy market produce), redeem tokens, and help collect customer and vendor surveys.

Volunteer opportunities also exist to help with market promotion on social media and at community meals. Sign up for Campus Kitchens on Monday evenings ( Email Spencer Carpenter for more information.) and Free Will Meal on Wednesdays.

If you have time to share, please contact Carlene at 315-261-8054 or [email protected].
GardenShare Events
GardenShare's Tenth Annual Fundraising Dinner will be held on June 25, 2019, at Jake's on the Water. Althlough reservations were due last Friday, we still have a few spots left. Contact us today to reserve a place.
