Come to the Bucc to meet your farmers!
Wednesday, April 4, 2018
5:00- 9:00 PM
Downstairs of the Cascade Inn
4 West Main Street, Canton

Here's your chance to ask local farmers everything you want to know. What varieties of peppers are they growing this season? What's their philosophy on farming? What-all do you actually get when you buy half a cow??

Farmers include Pat and April St. Onge of Pat and April's Pork, George and Mary-Ellen Blatchley from Circle G, Kassandra and John Barton from 8 O'Clock Ranch, Dulli Tengeler from Birdsfoot Farm (pictured at left), Mike Corse from Deep Root Mushrooms, Joel Howie from Canton Apples, and Matt Martin from M&M Eggs, Ron and Cathy Smith from Smith Chicken Farms, and Cat Bennett from Milkweed Tussock Tubers and Bittersweet Farm.
Reading and discussion group continues
This month's book for The Serious Side of Food discussion is T.C. Boyle's  The Road to Wellville, an historical novel that will take you on a weird, wild journey through the health and wellness discoveries--and fads, and scams--of the turn of the 20th century.

Our discussion will take place on Thursday, April 12 in the Village community room at the Potsdam Public Library. Mark your calendars--and while you're at it, mark them for Thursday, May 10 (The Third Plate by Dan Barber) and Thursday, June 14 (In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan).

No registration  is required, and even if you haven't read the book but are interested in the topic you are welcome to join us.
Seeking volunteers to make free lunches for kids
We're searching for volunteers--and a paid coordinator--for the new Summer Adventures program, a partnership with Canton Recreation Department. Summer Adventures (which replaces Adventures in Learning) will feature six themed weeks with activities from local organizations such as Nature Up North and Canton-Potsdam Hospital,  all-day programming, free busing, and  free lunch for kids.  GardenShare's role is to provide lunches, with the aim of lessening the food insecurity that some of Canton's children experience in summer when school lunches are not available.

We're looking for community members to sign up for one week of prep, turning fresh local ingredients into yummy lunches, or one week of serving the lunches at Taylor Park. Groups of friends are encouraged to volunteer together--or anyone looking to make  new  friends! Prior cooking experience encouraged but not required.

Potsdam community clean-up day
Drop in to Ives Park on Sunday, April 15 anytime between 10 and 2 to help clean up the park and surrounding village for upcoming farmers markets, concerts, and the summer we're all waiting for! Cleanup supplies will be provided, but dress for the weather. This is a family-friendly event! Contact Chelsea Bartlett at CBartlett@svpc.net or (315) 713-4861 with any questions.

Farmers markets are just around the corner
Canton begins on  Friday, May 11
Potsdam begins Saturday, May 12
