With the final numbers still being tallied, it looks like this year's meeting was a smash hit with more than 1,500 attendees! ITE would like to thank all the attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, board members, family members, students, and especially the TexITE District for being wonderful hosts. Everything is bigger in Texas and that includes the hospitality and welcoming nature of everyone in the great state!

It was another packed room for Tuesday's Power Plenary, sponsored by Transoft. Johanna Zmud, Director, Washington, DC Office, Texas A&M Transportation Institute moderated the session discussing Mobility as a Service and Mobility on Demand, how it is being implemented in cities, what challenges and opportunities exist, and what the future holds. The p
anelists included, Roger Millar, Secretary of Transportation, Washington State DOT, Seattle, WA, Karina Ricks, Director, Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, Gabriel Scheer, Senior Director of Strategic Development and Special Projects, Lime, and
Kathleen Baireuther, Markets & Operations, Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. Discussions centered around data, how best to use the information gathered, creating slow lanes and defining what goes into those lanes in various cities and circumstances.

Tuesday Sessions Address Change Issues in Transportation

Mukul Mulhotra of MIG Inc., talks about a complete streets project in San Antonio, TX during the session
Complete Streets Boulevards. He described the multiyear study that was undertaken to find out what the public wanted out of the project. "They said, 'We want something that is well connected, safe and secure, with good lighting,'" he noted. "They wanted to respect all of the modes of travel, too."

“Follow the rules.” “It’s important to always look both ways.” “I hope to see a bike lane or maybe a sign saying share the road or be aware of other bikers.” These are just a few words of wisdom offered by the all-kid panel in the session
Generation Z – The Fortnite Evolution. They were asked about safety, including what factors they’re aware of when riding their bike. “Bikers should get rid of distractions,” said one participant, “Earphones, or being on the phone while biking, or biking one handed can lead to crashes.”

There was a lot of attendee discussion regarding the importance of understanding the relationship between trip generation and parking cost/availability, as well as the need to provide practitioners with design and operations tools for parking facilities.

During the technical session
Impacts of Connected and Automated Vehicle Technologies on Transportation Engineering and Planning, Thomas Williams with DKS Associates emphasized the shift in modeling that must occur in order to facilitate connected and automated vehicle technology. "We have to start thinking of things called exploratory modeling, maybe more strategic modeling, but we don’t want to let go of the stuff we’ve been using, trip modeling and activity-based modeling," he said. "How do we communicate this level of certainty or uncertainty we may have as we move forward to decision makers?"
