Real Estate Wire Fraud Is Real -- And It Almost Happened to Me

It all started with an email.
Just days before closing on a home, I got a message from my escrow officer-or at least someone pretending to be her. Our closing costs needed to be wired to the title company right away, she said, or our closing date would be pushed back.
Considering the six weeks I'd spent waiting to close on the property-not to mention the disdain I had for our current rental home-the message sent my heart racing.
The font was right. The signature was right. There was even a CC to my real estate agent. But something seemed off.
A closer look at the header revealed the problem. Each email address-one for my agent, one my mortgage broker and one for my escrow officer-was a single character off.

Lee-Ellen Cox, Settlement Processor
Lee-Ellen joined the VTC team on June 17th as a Settlement Processor. She brings 9 years of experience in settlement services, as well as 10 years in different positions within mortgage banking. Her years of experience in varied positions allows her to have a well rounded knowledge of the closing process from beginning to end, and the expertise to help troubleshoot and resolve any issues that may arise. Lee-Ellen is a native of the New River Valley, yet currently resides in Roanoke with her son. In her free time, she enjoys watching her son play basketball and cheering on the Hokies! Lee-Ellen works from our Roanoke office. Please join us in welcoming Lee-Ellen to the team!

Erika Keller, Office Administration
Erika joined the VTC team on July 1st in the capacity of Office Administration. She will be fulfilling a wide variety of key administrative responsibilities to support the entire VTC team. Erika will be the first smiling face you see when you visit our Roanoke office, and likely the friendly voice at the other end of the phone when you call us. She grew up in Salem and is a graduate of Salem High School. Erika has completed two years of general studies education at Virginia Western Community College. In her free time, Erika enjoys kayaking, tubing, and being out on the lake with friends, family, and her dog, Cooper. Please join us in welcoming Erika to the team!

Heather Hancock, Settlement Post-Closer
Heather joined the VTC team on July 8th as a Settlement Post-Closer. She will be handling disbursements and post-closing responsibilities for our six settlement processors, as a part of our centralized post-closing process based in our Roanoke office. Heather began her real estate career in 2015 as an Office Administrator for a regional real estate firm. She was born and raised in the Roanoke Valley, and is a graduate of Northside High School. Heather continued her education at Liberty University with an emphasis on business. In her spare time, she enjoys sports, shopping, traveling and spending time with friends and family. Please join us in welcoming Heather to the team!
