Advice for Roommates

We realize that sharing a living space with someone new can create anxiety and stress for some, but we're hopeful that you will be able to connect with your new roommate prior to coming to campus to get to know them. You may already have an idea in mind of what you want in a roommate, or you may not know what to expect. Regardless, you will have some important things to discuss and consider as you begin a relationship with your new roommate.

We understand the popularity of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other online social networking sites but we ask that you not take everything you see on those sites for face value. We know that a first impression based on social media can often be different from who you really are as a person. Give your roommate(s) the courtesy and respect of remaining open-minded about who they are beyond their online presence.

The most common roommate conflict stems from communication breakdowns. It is so important for you and your roommate to discuss how you need to be communicated with and how they prefer to communicate. The great news is that your Resident Directors and RA's are trained in conflict management and can help facilitate those conversations if you are having trouble communicating.

Give living with your new roommate some time. Sometimes, the first instinct after realizing a major difference is to seek a room change. Having a roommate who comes from a different background from you furthers the undergraduate experience.
