Hardship even in a time of plenty
With the abundance of local food at this time of year all around the North Country, it's easy to forget how many of our neighbors are struggling just to get by and eat well.

Please consider acting on this reality with a volunteer shift at one of the free community meals around the county (find a list here) or volunteering at the Gouverneur, Potsdam, or Canton farmers markets. You can find a story about why farmers market volunteers are important below.

And don't forget about your local food pantries and neighborhood centers when you contemplate the extra zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and herbs in your garden! We have a webpage with the complete list.
Mark your calendars for the 5K!

Remington Recreation Trail, Canton

The Fight Hunger 5K is a fundraising walk-run at Canton's Remington Trail. Participants secure sponsors and then walk or run the 5K course.

Teams of participants from schools, churches, businesses, or other organizations are encouraged. All proceeds support GardenShare's food justice programs.

You can register and start fundraising anytime by going to our website  to download a paper pledge form or link to the fundraising platform. Participants are asked to bring their donations in the form of cash or checks to the event.

Did you know that our 5K is organized by a volunteer committee? If you would like to help the committee plan for the next 5K, please reach out to office@gardenshare.org or call (315) 261-8054.

Our great list of sponsors is a testament to our community's shared understanding of the importance of strengthening the local food system and abolishing hunger!

Farmers market volunteers make a difference

The job of a market manager is bigger than you'd think. Managers provide vital administrative services while also working with vendors to make the market as successful as possible for everyone. They also do farm visits to maintain the integrity of the farmers market. And if there are no volunteers, they have to provide continual credit/debit/EBT service to customers -- unfortunately taking away from their other responsibilities.

Could YOU be volunteering a few hours a week, providing fabulous customer servicec at the credit/debit/EBT terminal?

Markets in search of volunteers now:
  • Canton - Village Park, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am to 2pm through October 30
  • Gouverneur - Village Park, every Thursday from 9am to 2pm through October 25
  • Massena - Tractor Supply, Sundays 10am to 2pm and Thursdays 2 to 6:pm; Mondays at Massena Memorial Hospital 2:30-5:30pm, through Oct. 14
Talk to the market manager at your market or email office@gardenshare.org to learn more.
Our very own growing community hero!

We'd like to announce this year's Growing Community awardee: retired Executive Director Gloria McAdam. Each year GardenShare recognizes an individual or organization whose efforts strengthen food security in northern New York State with the Growing Community Award.

Gloria retired this year from GardenShare after three years of service to the North Country community and local food system, and over three  decades of service to the anti-hunger movement. Now feels like the perfect time to support her with a heartfelt recognition of all the energy and leadership she has contributed to the worthy cause.

Please join us for the Growing Community Social, co-hosted by GardenShare and SUNY Potsdam's WISER Center, on Thursday, November 1. Tours of the WISER Center and a cash bar will begin at 4:30pm, with a local dinner and program beginning at 6:30pm.
