Pride of Baltimore II returns Aug. 16-22;
Deck tours and two-hour sails available

The Pride of Baltimore II tall ship will be returning to Boyne City for a week starting Friday, August 16th. The 157-ft. ship will be docked at the 1 Water Street Pier, hosting a number of free deck tours. You can also sign up for one of five two-hour sails on Lake Charlevoix with an admission fee of $40 for adults and $30 for children ages 12 and under.
The ship is a reproduction of the the sleek, daring "privateers" that were the lifeblood of the fledgling American nation during the War of 1812. Ships like Pride II were commissioned by the U.S. government to attack and capture British merchant ships during the war. They were extremely successful. Today, Pride II is berthed at Baltimore's Inner Harbor when she is not sailing the world as Maryland's Goodwill Ambassador.
The ship has visited Boyne City several times in the past, thanks to a connection with local Realtor Wally Kidd, whose father was one of the founders of the nonprofit organization that built the original Pride replica ship in Baltimore in the 1970s. Kidd's family in Walloon Lake typically hosts the crew for some R&R when they come to Boyne City, and they will do so again this year. Pictures from 2016 visit to Boyne City.
Here is a synopsis of the ship's itinerary in Boyne City:
- Friday, Aug. 16 - Arrives between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Deck tours from 5-8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, Aug. 17 - Deck tours 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., day sail 3-5 p.m., sunset sail 7-9 p.m.
- Sunday, Aug. 18 - Coffee with the Captain ($5) from 10-11 a.m., day sail from 3-5 p.m., sunset sail 7-9 p.m.
- Monday - Tuesday, Aug. 19-20 - Ship maintenance and crew R&R.
- Wednesday, Aug. 21 - Deck tours 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., day sail 3-5 p.m., sunset sail 7-9 p.m.
- Thursday, Aug. 22 - Morning departure for the Tall Ships Festival in Brockville, Ontario.

Friday means fun and music for Stroll the Streets
Music, fun and great times fill the streets of downtown Boyne City again this summer as Stroll the Streets returns for its 16th season every Friday from 6-9 p.m. Stroll the Streets is a signature summer event for downtown, organized by Boyne City Main Street.
Musical entertainment ranges from contemporary, country, bluegrass, traditional, folk, jazz, to rock. Special activities include magicians, caricature artists, face painting, balloon twisting and more fun activities for kids. Next week's Polish Festival features music and fun for all ages
 Thousands will be converging on Boyne Falls for the 45th annual Boyne Falls Polish Festival next week, August 1-4. The festival kicks off as always with Locals Night on THURSDAY, featuring the Fabulous Oldies But Goodies Band in the Polka Tent from 7 p.m. to midnight. Thursday also includes a car show starting at 6 p.m. and a 50s and 60s Best Dressed contest at 9 p.m.
FRIDAY is Youth Day with games, carnival rides, a 1 p.m. bike parade, and a family movie at dusk.
SATURDAY starts with a 5K race at 8 a.m., followed by the Grand Royale Parade at 11 a.m. and music in the Polka Tent beginning at noon.A new event this year is the Bump-N-Run stock car race at the east End Of Church Street where the Mud Run is held. Also new is an appearance by the PRCUA Gwiazda Dancers in the Polka Tent.

SUNDAY starts with Mass for the 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time, celebrated under the tent at 9 a.m. Bingo begins and the Polka Tent opens at 12 noon. The 4-Wheel Drive Mud Run also starts at noon. The Polka Tent is open to all ages from 5:30 until the festival ends and the tent closes at 11 p.m.

The Evenings at the Gazebo concert series continues at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, with a performance by bluegrass band Full Cord in Old City Park.

Full Cord started as a project between band members upright bass player Todd Kirchner and guitar/mando player Eric Langejans. Soon after, Danny Seabolt, fiddler extraordinaire and luthier joined the band. The newest member is Brian Oberlin on mandolin (formerly of Grasshoppah). All seasoned bluegrass musicians, they wanted to build a musically diverse band using traditional bluegrass instruments. The band has an extraordinary song base, with songs ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to modern pop hits, big band era tunes and everything in between.

County entrepreneur competition set for Oct. 9th at Castle Farms
 It's time to polish up your business plan! Entrepreneurs and new businesses two years old or less are invited to apply to compete for business startup capital in the Charlevoix County Ignite Business Model Competition on October 9th at Castle Farms.
Competitors will receive business counseling from professionals to help in preparing a 4-minute business pitch for the panel of judges on the night of the competition. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be awarded as well as an audience selected People's Choice Award.
This year there are three county-wide pitch nights taking place in Antrim, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan Counties sponsored by Consumers Energy and DTE Energy Foundation and various local sponsors. The top three winners from each county pitch night will then have the opportunity to compete for additional startup funds at the Grand Event.

'Twinning' of the Boynes of Michigan and Ireland
From the Petoskey News-Review: Representatives from the Boyne River Valley Region of Ireland and Boyne City and the surrounding area marked the establishment of a new sister city relationship between the two communities with a special ceremony last Thursday. The event, known in Ireland as a "twinning" ceremony took place at the Boyne City High School Performing Arts Center and featured representatives from both areas.
A series of events highlighted a newly established sister city relationship between Boyne City and the Boyne River Valley region of Ireland. Among the dignitaries from Ireland were Noel French, a well-known author and historian from the city of Trim, a community in the Boyne River Valley of eastern Ireland. French, who is the mayor of Trim, presented a talk on the region's history at the Boyne District Library on Wednesday. The relationship grows out of the Boyne City area's roots to that area of Ireland. Full story.

Vendor registration opens for Sept. 28th Harvest Festival
 Boyne City will celebrate its autumn bounty at the Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, and online vendor registration is now open. This family fun day will include music, crafts, children's activities, food and fall produce in the downtown area from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As the extended Farmers Market will be moved downtown from Veterans Park, portions of Water and Lake Streets will be closed to traffic. There will be a Scarecrow Contest organized by the Boyne Area Chamber. Children's games and activities will be sprinkled around downtown. The festival is sponsored by Boyne City Main Street.

Charlevoix County Transit seeks your input via survey
 Charlevoix County Transit has made available a public opinion survey to gather input concerning public transportation needs and services in the county. This survey is part of community outreach efforts for a study that will result in a Transit Master Plan.
Individual survey responses will be kept confidential, and will not be identified by the name of the respondent.
Paper surveys are now available at the Boyne Area Senior Center (411 E. Division Street), Charlevoix County Offices (301 State St., Charlevoix) and Commission on Aging Office (218 W. Garfield, Charlevoix), as well as the senior centers in East Jordan and Charlevoix.
Additionally, Charlevoix County Transit and consultants from KFH Group traveled around the county on July 23 and 24 holding "pop up" Meetings On The Bus. The public opinion survey is being conducted through August 9th. Results will help inform the study team regarding the service options that should be considered for inclusion in the plan. The Transit Master Plan is funded by a grant from the Federal Transportation Administration and Michigan Department of Transportation.

Leadership alumni invite community to read 'Dare to Lead'
 Leadership Charlevoix County (LCC) is back at it again with the LCC Reads summer event. This summer LCC is reading and discussing Dare to Lead by Brenè Brown. LCC alumni and community members who are interested in sharpening and expanding their leadership skills are invited to join. Dare to Lead is the ultimate playbook for developing brave leaders and courageous cultures. Daring leadership is a collection of four skill sets that are 100% teachable. It's learning and practice that requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with our whole hearts.
Join us Tuesday, August 27 from 12-1 p.m. in the Boyne District Library community room for a brown bag lunch discussion of this book.
LCC Reads was started with the intention of creating a place where Leadership program alumni can connect and start a dialogue on leadership issues that impact Charlevoix County. Mission co-workers to Ethiopia, Than and Ruthina Veltman, are the recipients of funds raised from the annual Rummage Sale at First Presbyterian Church. Each year the church and community members donate a variety of items and part of the proceeds are donated to a mission project.
"The proceeds always make a difference, and we are thankful for ongoing community support," remarked Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Broschart.
This year's recipients have a connection to Michigan as Than (Nathaniel) attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, where his parents currently reside. "I am feeling a bit nostalgic about our upcoming visit to Northern Michigan," said Than. "We definitely want to visit some of my favorite places and are looking forward to worship at First Presbyterian Church - Boyne City on Sunday, July 28 at 10 a.m." The worship service will include an informational presentation and special music by a Celtic Trio of Gaeyle Gerrie Boss, Hannah Harris, and Elizabeth Broschart (the pastor at FPBC).
The community is invited to join in worship and a time of conversation during the after worship coffee hour.

Volunteers still needed to give out info at the Log Cabin
The Boyne Area Chamber and the City of Boyne City
have launched the Log Cabin Volunteers group to give out information from the Sunset Park cabin this summer.
So far, 11 local people have volunteered as part of a group that will provide visitor information in the log cabin formerly occupied by the chamber. Our goal is to provide staffing during prime times when visitors are in town.

Show has something for all - music, tractors, crafts, demos
As in past years, the Northern Michigan Antique Flywheelers show, held from July 25-28, will have something for everyone to enjoy. The 32nd annual show includes music, tractor parades, a flea market, arts and crafts, museums, and working demonstrations.
Located on US 131 between Boyne Falls and Walloon Lake (00145 US-131 North), the main activities of the show run daily from 9 AM to 5 PM with an all-you-can breakfast starting the day at 7 AM and music and more in the evenings. No pets, bicycles or alcoholic beverages are permitted on the show grounds.
Seniors' Day will return on Thursday with senior admission discounted from $7 to $5. Children under age 12 are admitted free all weekend with an adult. Opening Ceremonies are held daily at 9 a.m., the Parade of Power is at 2 p.m. and the Tractor Safari is at 7 p.m. (excludes Sunday).
Live music is scheduled all four days with Horton Creek featured from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. Music schedule.
The Northern Michigan Antique Flywheelers Club is an educational nonprofit organization that uses demonstrations and displays to showcase "Life in the Past Lane" and present many aspects of daily life in rural northern Michigan in the early part of the last century. In addition to the annual show every July, the club hosts more than 1,000 area fourth graders over a four-day period in September for Student Harvest Days.

Toronto Classic Legends concert coming to Boyne on Aug. 10th
 The Boyne Country Community Center is presenting the Toronto Classic Legends concert as its next fund-raiser at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 10th, at the Boyne City Performing Arts Center. This is the fourth visit by this tribute company from Toronto. The Legends concert features seven performances reliving rock and country superstars who have collectively sold over one billion albums. An evening with seven Legends of Rock and Country, performed by Toronto's best Tribute Entertainers. All of them are backed by a four-piece live band. Boyne District Library presents "The History of Blues in America" with Joey Leone at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25 in the Community Room. This will be a free one-hour program led by music historian and acclaimed guitarist Joey Leone, along with two other musicians covering the history, influence and impact of American blues music through songs, stories and historical facts. As a uniquely American genre of music, Joey highlights the influence of blues on virtually all contemporary music over the past seven decades as well as a recurring theme of how this style of music brought people together in good times and bad. Joey also ties in his upbringing in Brooklyn NY, and how important the Public Library System was for his discovery, passion, and education about music and music history. Joey has toured as a sideman guitar player for many high profile artists including Etta James, The Coasters, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Chaka Khan, and more.

Pedal, Pig & Pint bike tour circles Lake Charlevoix on Aug. 4th
 Bring your family and friends and join Raven Hill Discovery Center for the 2nd Annual Raven Hill Pedal, Pig And Pint on August 4th. It's a 22 or 42-mile bike tour along Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. Meet at Stiggs Brewery after the ride for a Pig Roast lunch and a pint. Portions of Stiggs' beer sales that day will go to Top of Michigan Bike Association (TOMMBA). Participants who purchase a Raven Red beer will be entered in a contest to win a private beer tasting at Stiggs.
All levels of riders are welcome. The course is 42 miles around Lake Charlevoix or 22 miles to the Ironton Ferry and back. Adult advance registration is $45 ($50 on the day of the ride), and $25 for children, and the fee includes brunch, T-shirt and a donation to the Raven Hill Discovery Center. All participants will also receive a one-day admission pass to Raven Hill.

PirateFest looking for parade entries, boats and volunteers
 The Boyne City PirateFest

The festival
is also looking for boats and crew to participate in the Invasion Flotilla during Stroll the Streets on Friday, August 9th. The pirates assure locals that this flotilla will "enter the town in peace." Organizers said, "For further details like coordinated landing to unload or to remain docked in town during Stroll the Streets we would like to communicate with you - though most ship mates are simply in search of rum and women."
WALLOON PIRATE POKER RUN - Tommy's of Walloon is hosting a Pirate Poker Run from 1-4 p.m. Sunday Aug. 4. Registration begins at noon.  TOMMBA finishes "Stroll the Steeps" Avalanche trail
The Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association trail builders have finished the last trail that was part of the plan for Avalanche. It is called Stroll the Steeps, and is a 'black-diamond' trail for advanced/expert mountain bikers.
Our hats are off to those that make Avalanche such a great place to bike and hike and when you make it to the top, one of the very best views of the lake anywhere.
We also note that TOMMBA has a cool new logo (below), which includes elements of a trail map in the background.

Woofstock returns with pets, food and music on Aug. 2nd
 The Charlevoix Area Humane Society will host their sixth annual WoofStock music and pet festival from 12 to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 3. This festive fundraiser will be held on the grounds of the beautiful Mackinaw Trails Winery on Highway 131 just south of Petoskey. We anticipate 2,000 people and hundreds of friendly dogs attending. There will be Live music on two stages including Blair Miller, Caleb Crouch, Dos Hippies with Kate McCauley, Holly August, Jessica Dominic and more. There is also an open mike stage. Also planned are animal agility demonstrations, Frisbee and other dog trick contests, the Doxie Derby at 3 p.m. and more for a full pet-friendly day.
Food, craft and pet-related vendors will sell and show off their products and services. Mackinaw Trails Winery will have beer and wine available, and a silent auction will help raise funds to support the Humane Society. The Charlevoix County Commission on Aging invites the entire community to the 40th Charlevoix County Senior Picnic & Health Expo being held on August 13th at the Harvest Barn Church in East Jordan. Picnic tickets are currently on sale and you must have a ticket to attend. Tickets are being sold at the Boyne City, Charlevoix and East Jordan Senior Centers. If there are tickets available, they will be sold at the door the day of the picnic. Tickets are the same price as last year at $5 for a Senior (60+), and $8 for others.
This year has a Vegas theme with great games and entertainment planned. Doors open at 9 a.m. so come early and enjoy the musical entertainment of Frank Sinatra by Billy McCallister beginning at 10. We have over 22 Health Expo vendors with room for 30 and prizes to complement the fun. We are grateful to have the Boyne City Rotary and East Jordan Lions once again cooking their famous grilled chicken to complement our amazing COA cook's creations. The Grand Door Prize is a $250 Visa Gift Card, and your picnic ticket automatically puts you in the running to win.

Northern scenery inspires featured artist Karen Kimmel
 Karen Kimmel is the featured artist for the Boyne Arts Collective. Karen began a serious interest in painting in 2008, after moving to Ann Arbor from Indiana. "I have continued my artistic development in Northern Michigan since 2009, focusing primarily on oils and pastels. I feel blessed to live full-time in Northern Michigan, surrounded and inspired by its unmatched natural beauty. It is a perfect setting in which to engage in plein aire painting, one of my favorite activities.
Karen is an associate member of Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionistic Society Inc. She is a board member of the Jordan River Arts Council and organizes their plein air sessions each summer. She also volunteers with several local service organizations.

Guess your finish time to win Paddle 4 The Pool event Aug. 17th
 The 4th Annual Paddle 4 The Pool fundraising event for the Charlevoix Area Community Pool will be held Saturday, August 17, at Ferry Beach in Charlevoix. Estimate your elapsed time for this paddle event, and if you finish the closest to your prediction, you are the winner. Students, seniors, everyone can enjoy this event. This is not your typical race, but it definitely is a contest. Grab your kayak, canoe or stand up paddle board and join us on Lake Charlevoix. Choose the two-mile or four-mile course. Please, obviously... no time pieces on board. Last year all participants for the 4-Mile Course finished under 1 hour and 30 minutes and the fastest time was 46:02. The winner was 5 seconds away from his predicted time.
Entry fee per watercraft (single or double) is $25 by August 9th, and $35 after that date. After you paddle, enjoy live music by the Crosscut Kings and tasty food from the Pigs Eatin' Ribs Food Truck.

North Central offers free workshops on food, farms and gardens
 North Central Michigan College's Corporate and Community Education (CCE) department is offering free workshops on food, farms and gardens this August, September and October. Seating is limited, and you must register in advance.
- On August 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. Matt Killman, formerly of Mackinaw Trail Winery, will present "Dessert and Fruit Wines" where he will demonstrate how to make wine from fruit other than grapes. Learn how to make port and other dessert wine making.
- On August 15 from 6 - 9 p.m. Mel Disselkoen, a 40-year veteran beekeeper, will present: "Farming Honeybee Livestock for Next Year's Bees." Learn how to maintain a healthy and productive hive. Sponsored in conjunction with the Little Traverse Bee Guild.
- On August 21 from 7 - 9 p.m., join Matt Killman once again as he reviews the "Pre-Harvest Checklist." Ensure you have what you need to run a successful harvest at your winery or at home. This class will cover everything from yeast selection and equipment tuning, to labware calibration and cleaning.
- On September 5, 12 and 19 from 7-9 p.m., Marilynn Smith, expert mycologist, will offer "Identifying and Harvesting Northern Michigan Fungi." There will there will be classroom study of edible and poisonous mushrooms in our area, as well as field trips to collect and identify fungi in the field.
- On October 7 from 7-9 p.m. join beekeepers from across the Tip of the Mitt at the "Natural Beekeeper" presentation to hear from renowned bee expert Ross Conrad. He will discuss Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture. Sponsored in conjunction with the Little Traverse Bee Guild.

Bike Share program continues at Sunset Park Log Cabin
 The Boyne Bike Share program launched last year returns this spring and summer. Four bikes are parked on the north side of the Sunset Park Log Cabin at 28 S. Lake Street, and the concept is simple: "Borrow a bike and bring it back for others to enjoy." There is no checkout system, just the honor system, organizers say. They only ask that the bikes be returned each day and not kept overnight. The bikes were donated by community members and service clubs, and they were refurbished by Mike Cortright of North Country Cycle Sport. Helmets are also available with the bikes.
Partners making this new program possible are: Boyne City Kiwanis, Boyne Valley Lions, Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce, Boyne City Main Street, City of Boyne City, and North Country Cycle Sport.

THE IMPACT OF PRAYER on people's everyday lives will be explored at Lifetree Café on Potluck Sunday, July 28 at 5:30. Bring a dish to share. Program begins promptly at 6:30. The program, titled "How Does Prayer Work? Exploring the Mystery of Connecting with God," features filmed interviews with Nathan Matz and Tosha Williams, two people who pray daily, but in very different ways. "I originally thought prayer was about pleading to God like he was a genie in a bottle," says Matz. "Prayer to me now is about trust. When I pray, sometimes I'm crying, sometimes I'm laughing, sometimes I'm screaming, and sometimes I'm angry. When I pray, I find God continuously pushing me into deeper waters."
