PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE presidentmessage
Dear Colleagues:

Chris Zink One of my goals as President is to help the members of the College learn about the inner workings of the ACVSMR so that you can take full advantage of the opportunities that the College offers to help you succeed in your practice as a sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist.

I'll start by introducing you to the hard-working Public Relations and Marketing (lovingly referred to as PR&M) Committee. This committee is chaired by Felix Duerr, now in his 4th year of service, and members include Andy Bathe, Philippe Benoit, Linda Blythe, Ken Bruecker, Tara Edwards, Evelyn Orenbuch, Pedro Rivera, Rob van Wessum, and Cooper Williams.

Simply speaking, the Public Relations and Marketing Committee is responsible for providing public relations marketing services to the ACVSMR. But when you look more closely, you see that this committee has a very broad reach and might just be the most visible one to the public. It works closely with the Continuing Education Committee in recruiting and supporting corporate donors and partnerships that benefit the College's educational offerings including outreach, annual meetings, student and resident programs, research funding, and scholarships. Don't you hate asking for money? Well, this Committee makes obtaining sponsor funding look easy!

They do this by seeking out, creating, and maintaining relationships with corporate sponsors through continued correspondence about upcoming programs and events, opportunities to support the education and research of students and residents, opportunities to support local and national sports medicine and rehabilitation initiatives in canine and equine sporting events and clubs, and partnership opportunities in print and electronic media. In many ways, this committee is the face of the ACVSMR.

Here are some of the recent accomplishments of this committee:
  • Reactivated the ACVSMR Facebook page - have you visited it recently? Check it out and post on it - it will increase your visibility to clients and colleagues! Over 3,700 people are following it!
  • Established an Instagram account. The URL is https://www.instagram.com/vsmr.official/ - help us grow our social media presence with some visuals - I know you have a bunch on your smartphone right now!
  • Designed a new ACVSMR brochure - available for every one of you to use in promoting your practice. It is available at this URL: http://vsmr.org/_pdfs/ACVSMR-brochure-2018.pdf
  • Continuing to produce the monthly newsletter that you are currently reading, with the assistance of Dr. Janet Van Dyke during the last 4 years and now of Dr. Ken Bruecker.
  • Established a sponsor liaison list to coordinate all sponsor-related activities of the College
  • Finalized a proposal for establishing outreach to veterinary students and currently in the process of assisting with the establishment of student clubs at veterinary schools throughout North America.
That's a lot of work for just 10 dedicated members. Thanks, PR&M!

Just one more item to mention - several individuals were inadvertently left off the list of committee members in last month's President's Message and I want to acknowledge them now:

Elizabeth Davidson, Credentials and Residency Committee Co-chair
Tim Lynch, Credentials and Residency Committee
Marti Drum, Exam Committee Chair
Ryland Edwards, Exam Committee
Juliette Hart, Exam Committee

That makes 55 volunteers running the ACVSMR show!

All my best,
Chris Zink_s signature

We Had a Great Response to the ACVSMR Canine Lecture Track at VMX in January!vmx

VMX logo Once again the ACVSMR lectures at VMX in Orlando, Florida, were very well attended and received by veterinarians from all over the globe. Wanda Gordon-Evans, DVM, PhD, DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR, and David Lane, DVM, DACVSMR, presented a series of lectures on January 22 focusing on the spine and the canine athlete. Dr. Gordon-Evans also presented some great information on lameness and musculoskeletal evaluations in the feline patient. There were great questions and discussion following all sessions that sometimes lasted well into the breaks. The CE Committee is now in the planning stages for another fantastic program for 2020.

Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students! library

The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.

For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.

We expect interest to be high and are hoping that you will support us in this effort by helping to build our library. Please contact Dr. Linda Blythe, linda.blythe@oregonstate.edu. Thank you!
