April 2021 at Place des Arts
home to our arts community
Greetings!

Happy April everyone! I'm looking forward to more sunshine and less rain.

This month, our Spring session begins. There's still time to sign up for one of our performing or visual arts classes, so take a look at our many options on our website! If you're already planning out your summer, registration for our Summer Fun! art camps and summer music and dance begins on April 18. The summer guide will be available online on April 12.

We have three new exhibitions on view starting today! Also, we have an announcement regarding our Summer Theatre Troupe program below. Find out about the show this year and more.

If you or someone you know is looking for a great work environment, Place des Arts is hiring for two positions. The deadline to apply is April 11. Find out more in the job descriptions linked below.

Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to share with you our commitment to featuring the work and stories of Place des Arts’ AAPI and Asian-Canadian artists, teachers, students, staff and volunteers who have made remarkable impacts and contributions to our arts community. Place des Arts stands with the recent Stop Asian Hate movement and we are heartbroken by the recent crimes against AAPI and Asian-Canadian communities.

You can read our full statement here and please keep an eye on our social media in the coming weeks.

Best wishes this April,

Aurora van Roon
Communications Coordinator

Open Spaces
Various Mediums in the Leonore Peyton Salon

Recreational open spaces contribute to the livability of neighbourhoods and improve the environment. With urban densification, a concern in today’s changing communities is ensuring green spaces are preserved.

Where is Home?
Mixed Media and Sculptures in the Mezzanine

Personal and social crises are an ongoing theme in Abol's work. This exhibition focuses on her roots as an Iranian woman who has chosen a new home abroad while exploring her cultural identity as an artist.

Threads of Hope
Fibre Arts in the Atrium

Threads of Hope explores hope, longing and desire for the future of the world.
What can one person do when it comes to global issues? It is surprising what can be accomplished if we work together, join forces and play off each other.

We welcome individual and core bubble visits to our exhibition spaces by appointment. Please call 604-664-1636 ext. 0 to book.

Our Summer Theatre Troupe Production has been chosen!
This summer we are putting on The Grimm Fairy Tales: An Inclusive Reimagining which is a new approach to this program. Emerging IBPOC/LGBTQIA2S+ theatre professionals will take the reins of the Troupe, and with the mentorship of a seasoned creative team, they will share their contemporary life experiences through reinterpretations of three folk stories originally documented in the 18th century by the Brothers Grimm.

Every summer, Place des Arts has produced a free play, put on by our Summer Teen Theatre Troupe which is a by-audition, performance-based company where the cast works with a professional theatre director, stage manager and designers to produce a play.

This year, we have renamed this program to Summer Theatre Troupe.

Our Programming and Events Coordinator, Michael Fera had this to say:
This year marks the 8th Summer of the Summer Teen Theatre Troupe. A program near and dear to us at Place des Arts. Over the year’s we have presented family-friendly adaptations of literary classics from JM Barrie to William Shakespeare outside in the local parks and at the TD Community Stage of Coquitlam. This year we have made an ever so slight change to the name. It is now simply the Summer Theatre Troupe. Why the change? The program has always been inclusive but now more than ever we want to reflect that in our name. Yes, the program will strive to engage young teen actors but this year we have two Emerging Theatre Artists joining the core creative team.
These Emerging Artists will be mentored by master theatre artists that have made a tremendous contribution to both the local, national and international theatre scene. We are tremendously excited for this season’s production and can’t wait to announce our talented line-up of artists.
