One of the most enjoyable books I read this past summer, Peter Wohlleben's The Hidden Life of Trees, has resonated strongly with how I think about our district. So much of the language and the concepts the author uses to describe forest life parallels closely the way our district community operates and the values we cultivate. He writes of "nourishing," "partnership," "interconnections," and "resilience"--all things that signal a healthy learning community as well.
Wohlleben maintains that every tree in a forest "is a member of this community" and "is valuable to the community"--just as the Morris School District is committed to ensuring that each child in our own community belongs and feels valued for what they uniquely bring. But if "a tree can only be as strong as the forest that surrounds it," so, too, must we continue to invest in our district community and work together toward our collective health and strength. That means creating an entire ecosystem in which children can flourish, surrounding our students with the programming, resources, and supports that will enable their success and well-being.
I see clear evidence of a thriving community in the many accomplishments of our students and in the dedication of our teachers and staff who encourage them, challenge them, inspire them, and help them ascend. I am grateful to serve our district and to be part of this special community.
Students Receive Honors at Morristown Festival of Books
Three MHS students received accolades at the 2019 Morristown Festival of Books Teen Poetry Contest! Their poems were crafted in Creative Writing and AP English Language & Composition under the direction of English teacher Jennifer Furphey. Congratulations to our students who earned perfect scores on their SATs, ACTs, and SAT II subject tests during academic year 2018-19! Their names will be added to the plaque in the high school atrium.
The actors' deeply moving performance was complemented by beautiful work in set design, costuming, hair and makeup, and lighting, as well as by a stellar pit orchestra. Bravo to all involved in this unforgettable production!
The new hallway outside the Guidance Office makes a powerful statement of community and Colonial spirit. Thank you to everyone involved in this project.
