Update on Policing Audits
As reported at the City Council meeting this past Tuesday, our office initiated the audits of police data and police budget on August 14, when we also requested data and information. The police data audit will include calls for service as well as police stop data. We are aiming to complete the police data piece in February and the police time and budget analysis in April. Our ability to meet these relatively tight timelines are contingent upon receiving the data we need to complete these analyses in a timely manner. While we have received some documents from the Police Department, and have met with some staff and external experts, we have not yet received the data to do this analysis. I shared the importance of receiving the data at the last City Council meeting and am thankful that the City Manager reiterated her commitment to ensuring our office has the information we requested.

I have staffed two experienced auditors to these projects and they will be joined by a new Auditor 1 who is coming on board in about month. I will continue to provide periodic updates on the status of the policing audits as we move forward.
Please Submit a Photo of a Berkeley Street
As part of our streets audit, we are looking for a few photos of the condition of streets in Berkeley to include in our report. This can include a newly paved street or a poor condition street. If you would like to submit a photo of a street in Berkeley for our consideration (please send in high quality resolution), please send it to auditor@cityofberkeley.info and include your name, street name, cross streets, and date photo was taken.
Census Deadline is September 30
Please complete and urge others to complete the census by its deadline at https://my2020census.gov/. As reported in Berkeleyside, we don’t want our city to be undercounted and face the risk of losing significant federal funding for schools, streets, housing, and important social programs. It takes about 10 minutes to fill out, and each person uncounted amounts to about $10,000 in funding.
Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month. With so many people isolated due to the pandemic, fires, and high temperatures, take a moment to take care of your own mental health during this unprecedented time. Please also connect with your loved ones and neighbors. Check in with them during this challenging time.
