Dr. King Birthday
Remembrance and Celebration 2019
Student performances and art work celebrating and remembering our namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Our theme this year is FREEDOM

The theme of FREEDOM is inspired by the book  Dreams of Freedom which was our All School Read on December 5th.

Middle School performances:
Tuesday, January 15th
at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Middle school performances will include: Jazz Band, Middle School Chorus, 7th and 8th grade Guitar and Dance Ensembles, Announcement of 8th grade African- American award winners and projects from students in grades 5-8. 
We recommend that families attend the evening performance. The morning performance will be very crowded as it will include the whole school in the audience.


Elementary performances:
Friday, January 18th
at 1:00 p.m.

All families are encouraged to attend.
ALL students in grades K-4 will be performing at this assembly. 

Dress rehearsal of our Elementary performances will be on
Thursday, January 17th at 1:00 p.m.  - This dress rehearsal is ONLY for the students. There will not be room in the audience during this dress rehearsal for parents/families. Please be sure your student is in attendance on that day so they are able to do this important dress rehearsal. 
Dance--Ms. Sheehan
7th Grade dancers have been working on a dance to the song This is Me! from the Greatest Showman. We were able to share on December 6th and received very positive feedback!


The 8th grade dance is complete. Thank you to Franny & Shai-Shai for choreography and music. All the dancers have worked to make this a great service to King Arts and the message for action from Dr. King. We hope you enjoy it!

7th & 8th Grade
GUITAR ENSEMBLE
The King Arts Guitar Ensemble is a class that meets during 7th & 8th grade fine arts classes, and is comprised of students who have demonstrated a high level of skill on the guitar. Since October, the Guitar ENsemble has been learning and rehearsing music for the MLK Assembly - January 15, 2019, 1pm & 7pm

Code 65
Computer Science Education
During the month of December, students in grades 2-8 are participating in a month of code. During these activities, students are asked to both create and problem solve using various web based coding activities. For more information on this computer science initiative, visit Code 65.
Visual and Media Arts--Ms. Stein
5th Grade
Pop Art Portraits
Students explored the Pop Art movement and the work of Andy Warhol. They were inspired to create self portraits






6th Grade
Stop Motion Animations

Sixth graders created Stop Motion Animations using their iPads and the Stop Motion Studio app. They were all compiled into one "feature film!" Some of the titles included, "Rat Circus,"
"Making Guacamole," "General the Bird," "Going to Japan" and "Fishing Dilemma."


7th Grade
Product Rebrands

Students recreated product packaging, ads and commercials. Brands included Gigio's Waffles, Skirtles & Eminem Candies, Sneakers, and Lucy's Candy Corns...to name a few!



8th Grade
Pop Art Magazine Covers

Eighth graders choose someone they felt was deserving of appearing on the cover of a popular magazine. The images were created using Adobe Photoshop.

8th grade shares another series of plays with the Kindergarten!
The 8th graders adapted 4 stories about Elephant and Piggie (by Mo Willams) and performed them for the Kindergarten students.
Visual Art--Ms. Vega
5th Grade Pop Art Paintings
5B students created Pop Art Paintings on cardboard. Students were able to use popular objects from their own lives in their paintings.
6th Grade Dreams of Freedom Portrait
6th graders in the B rotation worked on portraits with inspirational quotes and poems for the Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration in January.
7th and 8th Grade Paper Mache Pop Art Sculpture
7th and 8th graders from the B rotation used technique and their great sense of humor to create these creative pop art sculptures.
