PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT - MATH
Each week, we will be highlighting one of our programs or offering resources for the Radcliffe community to illustrate The Radcliffe Way!

The Math department has been busy using everyday Math skills that are important during the holiday season! From baking cookies to counting money for gifts, Math is essential. Radcliffe Math classes spent time this week using Math techniques to bake cookies. The classes measured ingredients, worked with fractions in recipes, and counted time to make sure their cookies were a success, but they have only skimmed the surface of how much math is involved in cooking!

The holidays are a great time to incorporate your child's Math skills into their daily life! Especially with cooking and baking, there are many ways to incorporate and build math skills with your kids! You can have your child generate a grocery list, find the prices of items, estimate the prices, estimate the cost, and generate the amounts in dollars or cents needed to purchase the items. Your child can work on adding totals, subtracting totals and finding the change received. After working hard to find and purchase the food at the store, the fun of creating the recipe begins! When working with recipes you can practice fractions by halving, doubling, or tripling a recipe. You can also practice adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing various amounts. Your child can practice determining the length of time needed in the oven, elapsed time for the length of recipe cooking, as well as distance and time traveling to and from the grocery store. Every Radcliffe student has been challenged with the task of practicing Math over the break!

Students measured, counted, and timed while baking their holiday cookies!

Students practiced counting the money for a variety of supplies needed for their gingerbread houses!
