Shop Local: Holiday Gift Ideas
View of the BMI Gift Shop.
According to the American Research Group , 53% of shoppers around the country started their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving. But there's still plenty of time to find that perfect gift! If you are in search of unique items for your friends and loved ones, look no farther than the BMI's gift shop. "It's so worth it to shop local and support local artists," says Kelley Edelmann, the sales and operations manager at the BMI. "You're getting something that's handmade, and you can see the love that went into what these artists create because it's not a job for them-it's their passion."

Among the local artists currently being represented within our gift shop is Baltimore's Gifted. Launched in 2015, Baltimore's Gifted is an e-commerce based, art and fashion initiative helping young African-American artists in Baltimore City transform their original art into products that can be showcased and sold online, at pop-up shops, and in commercial spaces.

"The main purpose of the program is to combat the exploitation of black youth artist in the city. Many youth creatives are not compensated or are under-compensated for their creative work," says Baltimore's Gifted founder C. Harvey. "We hope that more people will recognize black youth as legitimate artists and emerging entrepreneurs, not just kids doing cute things. Baltimore's youth have so much to offer and they need the support of the city through purchasing their work instead of just offering exposure. The BMI gives us a platform to both market and sell, and we are grateful."

In addition to the gorgeous pillows and tote bags designed by young artists from Baltimore's Gifted, visitors will find an amazing variety of products for all kinds of interests, tastes, and ages throughout our gift shop. Make the BMI a stop along your holiday shopping journey and give a gift that makes a positive impact locally.

Meet the Ancestors of the Smartphone

Tap. Talk. Text exhibition at the BMI.
An industrial-sized fact: the television was first introduced to Baltimore in 1947 when former Bethlehem Steel shipyard worker John Moscato assembled the city's first TV from a mail order kit and placed it in the window of his Highlandtown radio repair store. Television, like many other inventions, helped pave the way for how we receive information and interact with each other today.
Tap.Talk.Text, an interactive exhibition located in the BMI's newly renovated communications gallery, explores these technological predecessors and stories of Maryland's telecommunications industry.

The idea to renovate the communications gallery was sparked in late 2016 thanks to a generous seed gift from Dr. Ira Kolman, whose father, Milt, was a long-time volunteer at the BMI. Additional support from the Baltimore National Heritage Area, the Delaplaine Foundation, and the Herbert Bearman Foundation enabled us to expand the scope of the project into a free standing exhibition that provides a glimpse into the telecommunications revolution and its impact on Marylanders.

"In the age of the smartphone, we take for granted that information and communication are available almost instantaneously, but that wasn't always the case," says Joseph Abel, the BMI's research historian, who curated and led the exhibition's redesign. "To get where we are today, we've had to stand on the shoulders of a number of technologies that are now obsolete or dramatically different than when they were invented."

The new exhibition showcases antique telecommunications equipment and illustrates the origin  story of these devices and their impact on the region. Both minds and
hands will be occupied with the exhibition's interactive features. Visitors will take a journey into the past by listening to old radio programs and commercials as well as experience communicating messages using signaling flags and a telegraph key.

In celebration of the new Tap.Talk.Text exhibition, the museum will host a series of winter and spring public programs exploring broadcasting history and the social media landscape. For more details, check the events page of our website.

Wedding Open House Returns!
The BMI hosted 89 weddings in 2018.
Your wedding is a huge investment of money, time, and emotion-the BMI understands that well. In 2018, we were honored that 89 couples chose to tie the knot at our historic venue. The museum's waterfront terrace is one of the city's most picturesque spots for a ceremony, and our recently renovated Transportation gallery doubles as a unique cocktail area. And nothing can beat a reception in our Decker Gallery, where floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the harbor as an historic scale model plane hovers overhead.

On January 8, the BMI invites local couples to experience the space and connect with local industry professionals at our annual Wedding Open House. We'll have everything to help plan the perfect event: caterers offering delicious free samples, DJs, florists, photographers, and more. Explore our breathtaking waterfront setting and meet our event staff. Couples will be happy to know that the revenue generated from event rentals helps to support the museum's education programs, collections, and exhibits.
