April 24, 2020
The school district is committed to keeping you updated throughout the COVID-19 closure of Des Moines Public Schools' buildings and our completion of the school year through distance learning. This evening we feature a message from Superintendent Ahart as we prepare to launch distance learning for elementary and middle school students on Monday; post a link to information about Canvas, our digital learning platform; a look back at last year's OneRun, which was supposed to hold its second such event for the DMPS Foundation tomorrow but, of course, is postponed.

As on every Friday, we wish everyone an enjoyable weekend. Yes, that takes on a different meaning now than a couple of months ago. This can be a stressful and frustrating time for us all. That means it's more important than ever to find some time to take care of yourself and those important in your life.
COVID-19 CLOSURE UPDATES, NEWS AND REMINDERS
A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT TOM AHART

Dear DMPS Families,

Thank you for hanging in there with us as we attempt to navigate our COVID-19 reality. I know that our schools being closed has placed an additional burden on all of you. Today, our governor announced initial plans to reopen some services currently closed due to the pandemic. Our schools, however, will remain closed through the remainder of this semester.

We're working to make plans for a special class of 2020 commencement and will announce those plans soon. By midweek next week all of our PreK - 8th grade students should be connected to the internet, have a computer in their possession, and be actively engaging with their teachers; our high school students already are. This has been an exceedingly challenging time for our entire community.

I am proud of the DMPS team's response to these circumstances and want to assure you that we will continue to make decisions driven by the health and well-being of our students and staff and informed by the conditions in Polk County, the advisement of medical professionals, and science.

Foremost on my mind are the lost learning opportunities that so many of our students can ill afford to forego. We are working diligently to plan for new opportunities to make up for our educationally compromised spring. I am hopeful that a comprehensive and aggressive COVID-19 testing plan will soon be in place so that we may have the necessary data to inform when we can safely have our students and staff together again.

Des Moines is an extraordinary community and I am fortunate to be a resident and proud to be a member of our amazing DMPS team. We will continue to focus our energy and resources on serving our students and families, regardless of the challenges.

Please take good care,

Dr. Thomas Ahart
Superintendent - Des Moines Public Schools

A QUICK GUIDE TO ONLINE LESSONS ON CANVAS
To support students and caregivers in continuing with learning opportunities during the COVID-19 school building closure, we've created DMPS@HOME, a three-pronged approach that includes (1) links to high quality web resources, (2) print materials mailed to student households, and (3) optional activities and lessons in Canvas, the digital learning platform at Des Moines Public Schools. Starting Monday, Canvas will be activated for elementary and middle school students. The purpose of these online learning opportunities are to keep students and school communities engaged at the level that is right for your family during school building closures. There are no required activities and work will not be graded for students in grades PK-8. Schools will be reaching out to their students. Be sure to visit our web site for a guide to how Canvas works.
DMPS ONERUN: NOT TOMORROW, BUT ONE DAY WHEN IT'S SAFE
Tomorrow was supposed to have been the day for the 2nd annual OneRun, a fundraising event for the DMPS Foundation. Last year, 1,600 people took part, raising more than $16,000 in support of our elementary and middle school students. Needless to say, like so many things, this year's OneRun is postponed. It will be back when it's safe, but in the meantime here's a look back at last year's event. Also, would you like to support the DMPS Foundation?  Click here to visit their web site and make an online donation.
BE SURE TO VISIT TESTIOWA.COM
Earlier this week the State of Iowa launched the Test Iowa Initiative, meant to expand testing capacity to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Iowa. This  includes an assessment that was developed in coordination with the Iowa Department of Public Health to better inform Iowans of their current health status, whether or not they should get a COVID-19 test, and instructions on how to get tested. The assessment asks about existing symptoms and occupational considerations. Visit the testiowa.com web site to learn more and decide if you want to participate.
50 SITES NOW OPEN FOR FREE STUDENT MEALS
Throughout the COVID-19 school building closure, DMPS is providing free student meals at 50 locations around Des Moines.  Our meals sites are at all ten middle schools, most elementary schools, North High, and several auxiliary locations. Rain or shine, we will be there each weekday from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM to serve our kids. Click here to see a list of the meal sites.  Be sure to see the map on this web page to find the site most convenient for you.

Thanks to contributions from the community, DMPS has been able to add healthy snacks for children to eat during the stretch between lunch and breakfast the following day. If you would like to contribute to this effort, just click the green bar below.
