Alyssa Lederer
is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences at the
Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine
, where she also directs the Health Education and Communication MPH Program. Alyssa joined the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center team in the summer of 2018 as Co-Principal Investigator. Alyssa is an applied behavioral scientist and master certified health education specialist (MCHES). Her work focuses on the design and evaluation of theory and evidence-informed interventions, especially in the areas of adolescent sexual health, nutrition, physical activity, and public health workforce and instructional development. Lederer is particularly interested in the intersection between health education and behavior change and the translation of public health research into practice. She teaches Tulane’s school-wide foundational course “Design Strategies for Public Health Programs.”
Prior to joining Tulane’s faculty in 2016, Alyssa completed public health program development and evaluation work in a variety of settings, including non-profit organizations, K-12 schools, and as a university-based health promotion specialist for students and employees. She received her PhD in Health Behavior from Indiana University’s School of Public Health-Bloomington, MPH from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, and BA from the University of Virginia. In her free time, Alyssa is an avid dog lover, enjoys reading for pleasure, and is continuing to learn about all of the great activities that New Orleans has to offer.

Data into Action for Tribes: Introduction to Epidemiology
This course provides an overview of basic epidemiology for public health workers, including those working in the field of behavioral health.
The primary objective of this course is to increase the knowledge among tribal health departments of how to access available data from federal, state, and local resources for program planning surveillance, and data use.
Topics covered in this course include basic epidemiology, research questions, measures, study types, interpreting data, epidemiology in Indian country, and behavioral health epidemiology.

Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series
The Safe Water Program Improvement eLearning Series (SWPI) helps health department programs strengthen services to people that use wells, cisterns, springs, and other private drinking water systems not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Oversight for these systems vary, but core elements of successful, sustainable programs are similar. SWPI walks through the 10 Essential Environmental Public Health Services and the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards, and provides examples of using them to identify and fill program gaps in these types of drinking water programs.
