WHITE PLAINS BID PURCHASES ADDITIONAL BIGBELLY SOLAR COMPACTOR FOR DOWNTOWN
White Plains BID Big Belly Solar Garbage

In honor of Earth Day, the White Plains BID (White Plains BID) has purchased another Bigbelly solar-powered garbage can for the downtown area. The new receptacle was installed at the corner of East Post Road and Waller Avenue.

“The City and the BID work together on many initiatives aimed at improving the look and feel of our downtown, as well as the quality of the downtown experience for residents, business owners, and visitors,” said Mayor Tom Roach. “With the purchase of this additional solar-powered trash can by the BID, we are able to do something positive for our environment and the downtown at the same time. My thanks to the White Plains BID for all they do to enhance our city.”

“Greenifying White Plains has always been important to Mayor Roach and the BID is happy to supplement the city’s efforts to do so,” said Brittany Brandwein, the White Plains BID’s Executive Director.

The new receptacle will join 11 other Bigbellies currently operating in White Plains, including the following locations donated by the BID:
  • Corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and East Post Road
  • Renaissance Plaza near Mamaroneck Avenue

The City of White Plains began piloting Bigbelly Solar garbage receptacles in the downtown area in the spring of 2016. These trash cans are capable of holding five times the amount of garbage as standard trash receptacles by compacting the garbage deposited inside. This eliminates unsightly overflowing trash bins and reduces the frequency of garbage collections and collection costs. It also reduces carbon dioxide and pollution emissions from garbage collection truck traffic. Bigbelly’s compaction technology is solar-powered with battery storage to allow operations on cloudy days. The unit also features a hands-free foot pedal, which allows no-touch opening. This Earth Day, the BID also had all 12 White Plains trash receptacles cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized.

BIDCAP
Over the course of 2020, businesses were forced to temporarily close and still are under regulation to prevent the spread of the virus. As the economic impact of the Coronavirus persists and the cold weather presents its own challenges, the BID has repositioned its efforts to help our neighborhood stores and restaurants.

BIDCAP is now helping by:
  • subsidizing gift card purchases to local participating establishments
  • marketing the value of our neighborhood establishments
  • providing PPE to meet NYS safety guidelines
  • developing programming to keep everyone connected, even while apart.
As part of our COVID-19 Assistance Program (BIDCAP), the White Plains BID will be subsidizing gift card purchases at participating BID businesses. Purchase a gift card (up to $200) at half cost and we will underwrite the balance for the business. We are keeping an updated list of participating businesses on our website.

Purchase half-price gift cards at these businesses by June 15, 2021:

WHITE PLAINS IS HELPING SENIORS GET VACCINATED: MAYOR ANNOUNCES WHITE PLAINS COVID ANGELS PROJECT

The City of White Plains is launching a COVID Angels Volunteer Project to assist White Plains seniors with navigating the technology needed to obtain an appointment for getting the COVID-19 vaccination.
Mayor Tom Roach said, “My office has received many, many calls from seniors who have been unable to secure a vaccination appointment. The White Plains COVID Angels Project is designed to be a source of assistance to seniors who have limitations accessing vaccinations and to alleviate some of the stress that has become associated with navigating the vaccine process.”

The City of White Plains Youth Bureau and Recreation & Parks Department will be managing the project and are asking for volunteers to assist them in making calls and securing vaccination appointments online for our senior citizens.

Due the scope of this undertaking we will need as many volunteers as possible to navigate the New York State Department of Health website, as well as log data related to securing an appointment online. A volunteer organization has been identified to assist with implementation of this project: SEWA International (Westchester). SEWA International is active in twenty countries and has worked closely with other local disaster relief organizations throughout New York and USA. SEWA serves humanity irrespective of race, color, religion, gender or nationality. They specialize in disaster relief and rehabilitation. SEWA’s development programs focus on family services; child, tribal and refugee welfare; women empowerment; health; and education. In addition to their extensive work in the US, they have also undertaken development projects in Colombia, Guyana, India, Kenya, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Volunteers with various skillsets are welcome! We will need volunteers to be team leaders and work on data collection as well as booking appointments online and making calls. Acquiring appointments online can be done 24 hours a day which lends itself to flexibility for all who want to help. People can volunteer whatever time they may have to give. The planning process is well underway to give White Plains seniors assistance obtaining the protection they need to combat this aggressive virus.
