Message from the President...

Dear Members and friends,
As Rabbi Kozlow said in her letter this week, we had an amazing Hanukkah party.  Great music, wonderful food and drinks, and with each group called to light a menorah a perfect display of what Bnai Israel has become.  Singers and students, travelers and teens, gabbais and more all helped with the Hanukkah lights.  It was festive and merry, and a great time was had by all.  Thanks to Rabbi Kozlow for organizing and working so hard, and thanks to everyone that helped along the way.

As we wind down the year just a few thoughts.  Beginning in January of 2019, we will no longer offer cemetery plots as a free addition to membership.  This applies ONLY to those joining after January 1st,2019.  If you know of someone that is considering joining please share this information and have them contact Rabbi Kozlow to discuss membership this year.  Rules and regulations for burial in the New "ANNEX" cemetery and prices for both the Traditional and Annex Cemeteries are currently being addressed by the cemetery committee and the board and will be available early next year for review and will be presented to the congregation at the April congregational meeting.

Next week, at our December Board meeting, Carol Atwood our current Vice President at large, will be leaving the board. Carol chose to step down for a "breather" after serving on our board for over a decade.  She has been our Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President in those years. She will continue to serve on our communications and membership committees. Thank you, Carol, for all you time, commitment, and dedication for so many years.  You deserve a break, but not for too long. Andrew Zeldin is also leaving the Board this year, but he too will continue to be a major part of our congregation, participating with our Men's club, One Room Shul House, and community liaison with our local senior groups.
Thanks to Andrew for a job well done and get better quickly.

Next Shabbat, December 21st, the Board will be hosting our Friday night Guest Chef's dinner.  Please make sure to call Kate and make your reservations.

and finally,
Just when you think no one is paying attention...
In my annual "giving is better than receiving" letter back in November, Sue Mintzes called to my attention several charities that I neglected:

Jewish National Fund JNF.org      Hadassah- hadassah.org
Mazon- Mazon.org                   HIAS- Hias.org

Please add these to your list as worthy, honest and extremely important organizations that need our help to continue the important work of Tikkun Olum.

Shabbat Shalom and see you in Shul,

Barry

 Weekly Newsletter Publication
We try hard to send out the
Weekly Newsletter
on Thursday afternoon or evening.
This is often not possible because news
articles come to us so late forcing
us to work into the "wee" hours.
It would be a great help in accomplishing this goal
if articles for the Newsletter were
in
Kate's office by
Thursdays at Noon.
Articles coming in later will have to be pushed
into  the next week.

Thanks for your help.
Coming Events
Please check Rabbi's Calendar before scheduling any event involving the congregation.  We aren't able to advertise any events in the  Weekly Newsletter
or on the ShulCloud calendar unless Rabbi's Calendar has been consulted.

Book Club News

Our next book club meeting will be Wednesday, January 30, from 1-3 pm.
Barbara Waxman will host our group.  Her address is 2815 Cambridge Drive.  The home phone number is 910 763-7469 and her email to which you can RSVP is barbarawaxman@gmail.com.
We'll put off our discussion of the Sephardic Jews of New York, The Grandees, till (perhaps) the end of March. Instead, we'll have a discussion of another Sephardic Jewish woman, Emma Lazarus, looking at excerpts from two of her essays on Jewish immigration: "The Jewish Problem" and "An Epistle to the Hebrews."
I'll make copies of these two excerpts (15 pages in all) and put them in a folder in the Sisterhood mailbox at the shul.
The Sisterhood book club is open to all Sisterhood members. If you'd like to be added to our email list, please let Barbara know: barbarawaxman@gmail.com.
