Cost-$125 to IAFP/AAFP Members and/or those attending the Spring Refresher Course $175 to Nonmembers who DID NOT attend the Spring Refresher Course
This session meets the Iowa Board of Medicine CME Requirements on End of Life Care (Iowa licensed physicians are required to complete 2 hours of a Category 1 activity in end of life care every five years. This requirement, which became effective August 17, 2011, is for physicians who provide primary care to patients.

Lecture 1: Palliative Care and Hospice Essentials
At the end of the lecture, the participant will
- Understand the difference between palliative care and hospice care
- Have a working knowledge of the universal principles of "primary palliative care"
- Be aware of the specific circumstances calling for referral to a palliative care team
Lecture 2: Goal setting: The Family Meeting
At the end of the lecture, the participant will
- Understand the essential elements of the family meeting for goals of care discussion
- Be able to incorporate those elements efficiently into a limited office visit
- Learn strategies for managing challenging situations such as requests to "do everything"
Lecture 3: The role of the Family Physician in the application of new technologies in advanced disease
At the conclusion of the lecture, the participant will
- Recognize new technologies that patients may encounter as they face advanced disease
- Understand the role of the family physician in supporting patients and families in these situations
- Be able to support patients in decision making using specific communication tools
