Cookie Decorating Party
Reported by Nayda Voskerijian
On Sunday, December 9, 2018 Sunday School commended once again. Students and teachers created a Christmas ornament, which was sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Simon & Lara Bardizbanian. After Sunday School the children along with their families and the Sunday School Staff enjoyed an afternoon full of fun decorating cookies.

The much anticipated St. Sarkis Church annual Christmas Cookie Decorating event took place on Sunday , Dec. 9th., in the main hall.

Before the children began their activity, they were treated to an array of special brunch delicacies. The menu consisted of home made Khachapuri, which is a traditional Georgian dish made with cheese in leavened bread. Also another special breakfast item Crêpe ( French breakfast staple) was served with maple syrup or chocolate Nutella. variety of sandwiches and bagels with cream cheese were also added to the menu.

When the children finished their enjoyable brunch, they were invited to their work tables where they were given various shapes plain cookies to decorate. It is worth noting that the cookies were lovingly baked and donated by none other than our organist Mrs. Haigouhi Megerian. Mrs. Megerian also worked tirelessly in the kitchen both Saturday and Sunday, along with her helpers, members of Sunday School teachers and The Ladies Guild, preparing and baking the Khachapuri and the crêpes.

ARS Wine Tasting Event
Reported by Miss Nevair Oranjian

On Friday, December 7, 2018 the Armenian Relief Society Erebouni Chapter of New York hosted an Armenian wine tasting event.  Over 60 adults participated in the classy evening surrounded by great company, tasty food donated by our Ungerouhi's, and Armenian wines.

The evening started with welcoming remarks by Ungh Nevair Oranjian, chairperson of the Erebouni chapter, who discussed the goals of the ARS and introduced Krush! Armemian Wine Imports, Inc..
Derek Kruizenga provided background of the company and the different Armenian wines presented at the event.

Wines originated from the Tushpa, Van Ardi, Old Bridge, Voskevaz, and Hin Areni wineries. Throughout the evening, attendees had the chance to sample and learn about the many red and white wines.

Ungerouhi's, friends, and guests enjoyed the atmosphere and delectable wines. Thank you all for attending!
Saint Sarkis Basketball News
Saint Sarkis Basketball News - Much Joy for the Christmas and New Year break

Both our Girls and Junior Boys teams won again last Sunday with enviable 6-0 and 5-1 records respectively for the first half of the season.

The girls were finally tested against a very strong St. Leon 1 team, both teams coming in undefeated in a rematch of last year's Championship game.

St. Leon started quickly and by the 1st quarter had a commanding 6-1 lead. We had our chances but our shots were not going in. The 2nd quarter saw an almost complete reversal, with St. Leon building an 8-1 lead before both our defense and offense kicked into gear and St. Sarkis went into a 12-4 scoring streak to end the half leading 13-10.

The girls continued to play inspired and aggressive basketball, extending the 3rd quarter lead to 20-14, once again lead by our super twins Stephanie and Breanna. Tonya, Alicia, Maria, Olivia and Margaret  also played inspired basketball.

The final score, 27-23 reflected a strong come-back by St. Leon after Stephanie fouled out with 7 minutes left to play in the game, but our girls played hard to preserve the lead and came away with a well deserved win.
It was a hard fought, physical game, with some of our girls sporting some bruising, but very happy to end the 1st half of the season UNDEFEATED. No better way to end 2018, and we feel optimistic for the 2019 half. Let's Go St. Sarkis.

The junior Boys played a much-improved Sts. Vartanantz team who matched us almost basket for basket for the first 3 quarters of the game. After trailing at the half 14-18 and the third quarter mark 21-22, our boys also put the pedal to the metal and scored 15 points in the final quarter to a a 36-33 hard fought win. Alex Kouyoudjian, Brandon Nalbandian, Shaheen Feisel, Mathew Varadi and Noah Cubi were the main scorers, but every member of the team played and enjoyed the game. Worth mentioning is the play of Gary Nercessian, who is finally beginning to play up to his potential and we expect solid contributions from him in the spring of 2019 games.

Practices for both teams will continue through December, but for now the parents are busy prepping for the Basketball Christmas party, Saturday the 22nd. We have much to celebrate.

Need to mention another good development. For the last couple of girls practices, three young ladies, ages 8-9 were brought by their parents to start training and learning the game, in preparation of the time when they can actually join the team. They also seem to have a good time and look forward to the Friday night practices. We encourage everyone with girls in this age group to join these young ladies, and make friendships that might last a lifetime.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all from

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14)
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
For to which of the angels did God ever say,
"You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.
You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? 14Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (17.1-10)
Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves.
"If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him."
The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.
"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
ST. JAMES OF NISIBIS
This Saturday (December 16) is the Feast of St. James (Hagop) of Nisibis (Mdzbin). He participated in the first ecumenical council in Nicaea (325), where he earned great respect from the Emperor Constantine and the other attendees. He was born and died in the city of Nisibis located in what is now southeastern Turkey, an important early Christian center in Asia Minor and a transit point of the caravans traveling east and west.

James is one of the most beloved saints in the Armenian Church. He is also honored by the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Coptic Church, and the Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches. He was ordained Bishop of Nisibis in 320 AD.

St. James sought to find Noah's Ark as proof for skeptics. On the eve of his ascent to the summit, an angel appeared and told him that he need not climb to the summit and gave him a piece of the Ark. The piece is kept at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

The heavenly hosts rejoiced at the greatness of your feats by which you in the flesh became like the angels on high; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven. And we with a joyful voice celebrate your holy memory. O venerable witness of Christ, holy bishop James; we have you as intercessory for us before the Father in heaven. You decided on severe toils to see Noah's Ark and from the angel's hand received a portion of the wood which served the human race as salvation; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven."
(Canon to St. James, Bishop of Nisibis, from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church)
