Family Prayer

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Reading I : Acts 9:26-31
The church was at peace.
  • In the reading for the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples were unwilling to believe in Paul's radical conversion.
  • Through the influence of Barnabas, the disciples come to believe in the conversion of a former enemy.
  • The early Church begins to learn the strength of God's grace and forgiveness.

Reading II : 1 John 3:18-24
We are called to believe and to love one another.
  • The passage from the First Letter of John declares that if we truly live in God, we will love in deed as well as word.
  • Our task is to live in the life of Christ.
  • We are able to do this through the Spirit given to us.

Gospel : John 15:1-8
I am the vine.
  • The image of Jesus as the vine presented in today's Gospel comes from the figure of the vine common in the Old Testament.
  • Jesus, the vine, is the source of life for his disciples.
  • Life in Christ results in good works in the lives of his followers.
A Message from Mrs. Laidlaw Otto

Dear SJE Families,

When you work in a school for as long as I have, your seasons tend to get mixed up.  Fall becomes the time of new beginnings, and spring brings the winds of change, leading up to the endings that early summer brings.  Teachers embrace these changes, knowing that they will lead to the blessings of watching our children grow.  Our newsletter today includes a note from your new principal, Mr. Ben Oberdorf.  As I am preparing for the next chapter in my life, Mr. Oberdorf is looking forward to starting his next chapter here.  I can’t wait for you to meet him.

Our second grade teacher, Mrs. Patti Knowski, has informed me of her decision to retire at the completion of the current school year.  Mrs. Knowski began teaching at SJE in September, 2017.  Throughout her time here, she has been a great asset to our primary program.  She happily accepted the responsibility for  preparing her students for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, and has done a consistently amazing job of this even when faced with virtual learning.

Mr. Oberdorf and I will be working together to hire a new second grade teacher.  We will begin our search for Mrs. Knowski’s replacement immediately, and will provide you with updated information about the new staff member as soon as it becomes available.

Although we will miss Mrs. Knowski, we wish her only the best in retirement.  We hope she finds good health and God’s blessings in her new pursuits, and we even look forward to welcoming her back for a visit now and then.

Together in God's Name,

Mary Laidlaw Otto

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf

It is with great enthusiasm that I am joining the St. John the Evangelist community as principal beginning with the 2021-22 school year. I look forward to serving you as we grow in faith and knowledge. I became an educator 17 years ago with the goal of making the world a better place one student at a time. I still have the same goal today. I want to be a part of a team that provides a Christ centered, stimulating, challenging, and safe learning environment that will develop future leaders. I am comfortable working with students of all ages and enjoy guiding students to successful outcomes. I have provided teachers support and coaching throughout my years in education, and look forward to continuing to help others develop their talents to best serve our students. I enjoy interacting with people and look forward to developing strong, positive relationships with you to help our St. John’s community to grow spiritually and academically.

I have also coached various sports to varying age groups starting with my nephew’s baseball team in 1998. I have continued to coach to this day. The satisfaction I received from coaching was a big part of me becoming an educator. I enjoy the growth of the individual as well as the growth of the team. Through coaching I felt as though I was making a difference in the world. This desire to be a difference maker is what led me to a career in education. Although this desire drives my actions each day, a greater driving force for me is my family.

I live in St. Francis with my wife and we have two grown children. My daughter, Marissa, is an echocardiographer at Froedtert and my son, Bradley, recently left the Navy after serving 11 years protecting and serving our country. He will be moving back to Wisconsin at the end of April to start his new career. He and his wife have one child, Brady Benjamin, born March 29, 2021, making me and my wife grandparents for the first time. We are so excited!

I look forward to meeting all of you. I thank you for welcoming me into your community and providing me with the honor to teach your children and lead the school community. It is my pleasure to serve you as principal next school year.

Sincerely,

Ben Oberdorf
