Advanced Cryocooling Talks, Cryo-EM at ESRF, and Serial Membrane Protein Crystallography
Cryo-Cooling and Sample Handling Optimization Talks
Are you or your organization interested in learning how to optimize sample handling and cryo-cooling protocols for crystallography? Our founder and CTO Professor Robert Thorne has been speaking to interested parties on this very topic.

Read about his recent talk at Yale University, and how you can learn more to improve your sample preparation.

Facility Spotlight: CM01 - The Cryo-EM Facility at the ESRF
A recent publication in Acta Crystallographica Section D:

"A new facility for cryo-electron microscopy focused on single-particle reconstruction of biological macromolecules that has been commissioned at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is presented. The facility is operated by a consortium of institutes co-located on the European Photon and Neutron Campus and is managed in a similar fashion to a synchrotron X-ray beamline. It has been open to the ESRF structural biology user community since November 2017 and will remain open during the 2019 ESRF–EBS shutdown."
"External users of CM01 have the option of either coming to the ESRF to oversee their experiments or sending samples for remote and mail-in data collection. In both cases, cryo-EM grids can be sent to the ESRF prior to the experiment date and stored using individually barcoded grid-boxes provided by the ESRF ( https://www.mitegen.com/product/mitegen-cryo-em-pucks-generation-2-0/)"
In support of the expansion of new facilities, MiTeGen continues to expand and develop new offerings for cryo-EM sample preparation.

Spotlight: Membrane Protein Crystallography
In situ  crystallography for Membrane Proteins
The in meso in situ serial X‐ray crystallization method (IMISX) (Huang et al., (2015) Acta Crystallogr D Biol Crystallogr 71, 1238) combines lipid cubic phase crystallization, direct freezing of the crystallization droplet without handling of the crystals, and data collection in situ. Recently, this method was used to overcome the mechanical fragility of crystals which enabled the X‐ray structure determination of chemokine receptor 2A (Apel et al., (2019) Structure 27, 427) at 2.7 Å resolution. The CCR2 structure provides the structural basis for ligand selectivity of CCR2 against chemokine receptor 5 and provides insights into the residence time of MK‐0812 analogs based on molecular dynamics simulations. These findings offer new opportunities for drug discovery targeting chemokine receptors.

Upcoming Events
At MiTeGen, we sponsor numerous educational events, conferences, and symposiums throughout the year. We believe in supporting researchers and our industry. Listed below are two upcoming events you should try to attend!

This meeting brings together structural biologists, biochemists and biophysicists. It offers an informal forum for them to meet and discuss their findings, network and share ideas.

Hosted by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine January 9th 2020 in New York, New York

We are sponsoring this event.

“The Workshop will address the essential questions and challenges of radiation damage to biological samples during their examination with ionizing radiation. ”

Hosted by the Paul Scherrer Institut March 25th to 27th 2020 in Villigen, Switzerland.

We are sponsoring this event.

At MiTeGen, one of our philosophies is to be a source of useful information to our customer, partners and readers. With this in mind we are sharing a few resources you might find valuable.
The Royal Society of Chemistry is offering financial assistance to help chemists who require additional support to attend professional events.

These Assistance Grants offer £1,000 per year to help chemists "with the cost of specific assistance or support needed for you to attend a chemistry-related meeting, conference, workshop or professional development event."
League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources is a consortium created by the Directors of the Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Laser user facilities in Europe.

"Its primary goal is to actively and constructively ensure and promote the quality and impact of the fundamental, applied and industrial research carried out at their respective facility to the greater benefit of European science and society."
