CAHEC Foundation Participates in Giving Tuesday

The CAHEC Foundation recently partnered with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina on their Giving Tuesday campaign. As a corporate sponsor of this event, our $10,000 was used to triple match all donations made to the Food Bank on Giving Tuesday, which occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. In total, the Food Bank raised enough money to distribute 1,605,950 meals to the community. Jenna Temple, Manager of Corporate Partnerships for the Food Bank, explained why campaigns like this are so important. "This year, the Food Bank raised more on Giving Tuesday than any other day in its history. We know the community is inspired to give when they learn their donation will be double- or triple-matched by other generous donors. Together, we make it possible to achieve this success, all of which allows us to continue supporting the communities we serve."

In addition to our financial contribution, we were able to volunteer on Giving Tuesday at the food bank with the other corporate sponsors of the event. To make this volunteer opportunity even more meaningful, we invited a couple of our local partners to volunteer with us. We'd like to thank Centrant Community Capital and Evergreen Construction on being wonderful partners to CAHEC, and for being advocates for our community. It's amazing what we can do when we all come together!

CAHEC Residents Eligible for $2,500 Scholarships

The CAHEC Foundation is partnering with the National Affordable Housing Management Association ( NAHMA ) Educational Foundation again this year to offer $2,500 scholarships to residents living in CAHEC-sponsored properties.  In 2019, NAHMA made a tremendous impact in the affordable housing industry, awarding $162,000 in scholarships to students throughout the country.
Visit the  NAHMA Educational Foundation  website for information on eligibility requirements and the online application process. To help NAHMA recognize CAHEC applicants, residents must type "CAHEC Foundation" beside the name of their apartment community on their application. If you'd like to advertise the scholarship to residents, please print the  Resident Flyer  to display on your property message board.

Helping Others in Affordable Housing: McDougald Terrace

McDougald Terrace, an affordable housing community located in Durham, NC, was recently evacuated after more than a dozen residents were sent to the hospital with elevated levels of carbon monoxide. Nearly 270 families are currently staying in nearby hotels so repairs can be made to their units, leaving them without the many comforts of home.

Donations are being collected to help the residents of McDougald Terrace, including food, water, clothing, and toiletries, in an effort to support them while they are displaced from their apartments. Martin Yeager, Acquisitions Analyst at CAHEC, and a Durham resident, recently volunteered some of his time at the Salvation Army, one of the drop off locations for public donations. "I volunteered because these are my neighbors and they are in need. The conditions at McDougald Terrace are on the scale of a natural disaster, and when our neighbors get hit by a hurricane or flood, there's an outpouring of aid and labor to help rebuild their lives. I think this crisis deserves the same kind of response and attention, not just from the government or nonprofits, but from ordinary citizens."

While McDougald Terrace isn't a CAHEC-sponsored property, the CAHEC Foundation wanted to show its support by donating items like diapers, baby wipes, baby food, and other personal hygiene items. A big thank you to Sadie Nott, another Durham resident and Acquisitions Analyst at CAHEC, and Martin (mentioned above) for shopping for the items and delivering them to the Salvation Army! We are proud to see the community come together to help those in need, and we're hopeful the residents of McDougald Terrace will soon be able to return home.
