FAR NEWS CORNER
FAR Combats C hildhood Malnutrition

FAR's nutrition program for preschool children, part of its Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program, was replicated in two more kindergartens starting this school year, ultimately bringing healthy lunch options to an additional 100 children. The new project offshoot provides nutritious meals for 45 kids from Tsaghkahovit and 55 kids from Noraqshen community kindergartens in Armenia's Aragatsotn Province.
"It's important to set good eating habits not only for developing the children's tastes for good food but also for cultivating a culture of healthy eaters. More and more, current meal plans emphasize food diversity that will provide enough calories for kids and develop their tastes," explained nutritionist Lilit Gabrielyan of Armenia's Health and Labor Inspectorate during a recent meeting with the staff of both kindergartens. Saints James the Patriarch of Nisibis

On December 15 Armenian Church will celebrate the Feast of Saint James of Nisibis. He is a beloved and prominent saint not only to the Syriac Church but also to the Armenians. He was born, raised, worked and died in the city of Nisibis which is today is known as Nusbyien a city in south eastern turkey. He passed his early years studying and with spiritual upbringing. In his young adulthood he withdrew to the desert to live and pray as an ascetic. When the bishop of Nisibis died two candidates emerged from two conflicting groups of the population. However, with the advice of the hermit Maroukeh everyone focused on James the hermit and summoning him from the desert ordained him bishop in 320 AD, in Amida.

The life of St. James is filled with incidents of miracles, which simply witnesses the fact of the broad popularity of this spiritual leader. He had been a disciple of the hermit Maroukeh and he in turn had been a teacher of Ephraem the Syrian Priest, a great patriotic writer. He was present in 325 AD at the council of Nicaea where according to tradition he enjoyed great respect from the Emperor Constantine and the attendees of the council. He became one of the great champions of the orthodoxy of the Christian Church against Arius and Arianism, which were condemned at the Council of Nicaea. Two or three times he saved his city from Persian invasion with his prayers. Although subjected to persecutions and tortures prior to becoming a cleric during the persecution of Maximianos nevertheless he died peacefully at an old age in 338 A.D. His relics, of which there are many, were taken to Constantinople in 970 A.D. and were the object of great honor in the imperial city.  Click here to read about St. James of Nisibis.

St. Mary Armenian Church 86th Anniversary Celebration

Parishioners and friends gathered at St. Mary Church for a beautiful celebration of the church's 86th Anniversary on December 9. The day was signified with a visit of Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan for the fist time after his election as the Primate of the Eastern Diocese. Hayr Soorp celebrated the Badark and presided over the festive luncheon and program in the church hall. It was also highlighted with the presence of the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the US  His Excellency Mr. Varujan Nersesyan.

At the conclusion of Badarak a special prayer was offered for the souls of victims of the 1988 earthquake in Armenia, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. During the Hokehankist service parishioners and friends prayed for the souls of their loved ones as well as all the deceased chairladies of the St. Mary Women's Guild.

The festive luncheon and program at the church hall included a beautiful performance by the St. Mary Young Performers under the leadership of Nunik Nishanian and Victoria Petrosyan.  Natalie George shared her experience in the Holy Land with a slide presentation and recounted her pilgrimage which she took in summer of 2018. Remarks were made by the Ambassador Varujan Nersesyan and NKR Representative Robert Avetisyan.

The culmination of the afternoon was the honoring of all those who served as a St. Mary Women's Guild chairlady. Der Hovsep presented the honorees with a certificate of recognition and stressed the important role of women in the church as "the educators, nurturers, the keepers and protectors of our Armenian faith and Christian heritage".

The event was concluded by remarks and a benediction by Fr. Daniel Findikyan.

Advent Bible Study

St. Mary Church held its third Bible Study session on Tuesday, December 11 entitled "The Peace Jesus Brings"  (Micah 5:1-5) .  During this year's Bible Study we take a Journey Through Advent with the Old Testament Prophets. The Christmas story began in the Old Testament. God's nature didn't change, nor did ours, and He had our redemption in mind all the time. The prophets Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Micah all proclaim the Christ that was to come.

The group of 12 people enjoyed the insightful Bible readings and discussion led by Mark Krikorian. This was the last Bible Study for this season.

The Bible Studies will resume beginning Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 7:30 PM at St. Mary Church Social Hall.
DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS

Abp. Aykazian Among Religious Leaders at White House Ceremony

Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocesan Legate and Ecumenical Director, was among the religious leaders present in the Oval Office on Tuesday, December 11, as U.S. President Donald Trump signed the "Iraq and Syria Genocide Emergency Relief and Accountability Act." The act seeks to redress crimes committed by the militant ISIS group, and provides relief to Christians and other religious groups targeted for extermination in those lands.

President Trump said the act directs U.S. assistance to those persecuted groups, and allows government agencies to aid in the investigation and prosecution of the "horrifying atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities in Syria and Iraq, including Christians, Yazidis, Shia and other groups."

In a White House luncheon following the ceremony, Archbishop Aykazian delivered the invocatory payer. "For us, our challenge is to stand with these Christian communities in their time of trial," he said; "to speak up on their behalf; and to act to preserve the ancient Christian enclaves in the Middle East. Our objective is to ensure that the rights of religious groups will be preserved; that faith remains respected; and that people of faith remain free to perform their obligations without impediment.
Choices: Divided Bodies
Choices: Divided Bodies
New Choices Video

Every community-every group of people-eventually has to deal with the problem of disharmony among its members. No matter how outwardly peaceful, disagreements and divisions arise, pitting individual members against each other.

The church is no different-indeed, it has dealt with disharmony from its earliest days. But in the person of Jesus Christ, the church also has an approach to healing the divisions that afflict us. In this episode of Choices, Fr. Tateos explains that churches since the Apostolic Age have tried to promote wholeness and harmony among their people. Find out how, in " Divided Bodies."

FAR Remembers the Earthquake

The Fund for Armenian Relief marked the passage of 30 years since the 1988 earthquake in Armenia last Friday, expressing its undying solidarity with the victims and the people of Armenia, and thanking the Armenian-American community for its continuing support and confidence.

"FAR was born from this tragedy," reflected executive director Garnik Nanagoulian in a message to the public. "As the world rushed to respond, several members of the Armenian community also decided to create an organization that would bring ongoing humanitarian assistance. It was an event that sparked 30 years of change."

Pictured above is a snapshot from the earliest days of that 30-year effort: Dr. Edgar Housepian, Archbishop Torkom Manoogian, and Kevork Hovnanian returning from Armenia in the days following the earthquake, where they surveyed the terrible damage and began planning a response.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28 "You are those who have stood by me in my trials; 29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
(Luke 22:24-30)
