2018 Day Cab Auctioneer of the Year -
Who Brings Home the Bacon?
Every year we look at the entirety of our auction data to understand which seller offers holders of inventory the best value when they sell their trucks. The thought is, if one seller holds a significant advantage over another, our customers should be leveraging their services to dispose of inventory, and using somebody else to buy. Our day cab analysis is included in this email. If you want to know what we think about Sleepers, that report is heading out to our Used Truck Business Intelligence customers this afternoon. At $1,195 a year for your entire dealership, it’s the best value in the business.

Auctioneer Volumes for Day Cabs
Ritchie Brothers has maintained their dominant position in the day cab market in terms of volume. Their deal with Penske was a huge driver of this volume in the second half of the year. It should be noted, however, that while RB maintained their dominance in the category over the year, both T&M and online auctions made up ground on them over the last 6 months. Online auctions made up 15% of overall sales, up 5% from last year.
Auctioneer Performance for Day Cabs
Ritchie Brothers takes the full year 2018 crown, commanding a $925 premium over Taylor and Martin (the base of this analysis) and a $375 advantage over AuctionTime. It should be noted that there’s an opportunity for arbitrage here, and this “advantage” won’t always pay off. The more expensive the truck, the higher the RB fee will be.
You should consider making partnership decisions based on the truck in question. You might get a few more dollars for it, and Ritchie Brothers will charge you more to sell more expensive trucks.  The data suggests that you sell newer and more expensive inventory online, and send the older and less expensive stuff to Richie Brothers.
