Winter 2020 Education Newsletter

Greetings from your chapter:

We thought you might be interested in what's happening with APICS Education in your chapter.

Top 50 Chapter Symposium

Our New Haven chapter was honored by ASCM as one of the top 50 chapters in the United States f or education sales for the period December 2018 through November 2019.  The award ceremony was held January 23-26 in Orlando, Fl.  Jim Timmons (President) and John Sawyer (VP of Education) attended.  There were breakout sessions Friday afternoon, and awards dinner on Friday, and all-day sessions on Saturday.  One part of the Saturday programs was a sessions on the Principles of Operations Management course offerings.  More on that later.

Principles Courses

Although ASCM/APICS puts much emphasis on our industry-leading certification programs (CPIM, CSCP, CLTD, SCOR-P), there is another complete series of courses called the Principles of Operations Management. This series has 5 complete modules, each with 9 educations sessions, and both mid-term and final exams, for a total of 11 sessions.  Each session is 3 hours in length. The individual modules are:
  1. Principles of Inventory Management (PIM)
  2. Principles of Operations Planning (POP)
  3. Principles of Manufacturing Management (PMM)
  4. Principles of Distribution and Logistics (PDL)
  5. Principles of Managing of Operations (PMO)
The nice thing about these modules is that you don't need to take all five of the modules, or even a complete module. The Principles series are in-depth training, and don't result in an ASCM Certificate (although the chapter does give a Certification of Completion at the end). Additionally, pieces of each module may be intermixed to fulfill a particular training objective.

ASCM/APICS have pre-configured 33 combinations of sessions to achieve specific training objectives, ranging from 3 weeks in length (Methods for Improving Warehousing and Logistics Activities) to 12 weeks (Supply Chain Management: End-to-End), with the average being 5 or 6 weeks. Prices vary with class length and material costs.

Please contact me (John Sawyer) at [email protected] if you have any interest in discussing these courses or tailoring one for your organization.

CPIM  Offerings

We are currently talking with another potential customer in the New Haven area about offering the 2020 version of CPIM (both parts) beginning in late Winter, 2020.  This company has expressed a willingness to host outside attendees.  Keep watching your email for an announcement early next year.

We are also thinking about offering CPIM in a less traditional format.  One option would be 3 7-hour Saturdays for Part 1 and 6  more sessions for Part 2.   A survey will be coming shortly where you can express your interest in this format.

CSCP/CLTD Possiblities

We are not offering either of these curricula at present, due to a lack of expressed interest.  If enough of you folks email me indicating an interest in either certification, we will offer classes.

Sincerely,

John Sawyer, CPIM-F, CIRM, CSCP-F, CLTD-F
