Hello Friends!
I am truly honored to begin my service as the president of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center Board (MWHC) of Directors. MWHC is a model organization committed to preserving and sharing the told and untold stories of women pioneers and leaders all across the state of Maryland. Our mission is to share HERstory so that it becomes part of HIStory to make OURstory.
Since the beginning of time women have been, and are, change agents. Our website and exhibits provide biographies of some of Maryland's most outspoken, driven, intelligent and fervent women leaders who have shaped the politics and policies that directly impacted women, improving in our day-to-day lives.
Of course, the participants in the Women's Suffrage Movement are among the women we celebrate. Did you know - I am sure you do - that 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Movement and the 19th amendment that gave women the right to vote?
Some may not know - or believe it - but women do play a major role in deciding who wins elections; and this year in particular, there has been a significant increase in the number of women running for elected offices. In fact, for the first time in our country's history, we could have 100 women of all political affiliations headed to the House of Representatives. This demonstrates what happens when women recognize their own power and...choose to lead. We have the opportunity to choose who we want to guide our democracy and to represent us - locally, statewide and nationally. Who you choose is up to you but please exercise your personal power and VOTE!
Keeping the story of women and the power of women to lead effectively - in families, in communities, in business, in science, technology, arts and education and government as well as in a myriad of other ways is central to our mission. In the year ahead, the MWHC will continue to provide forums for discussion, celebration and engagement. It takes a village to keep HERstory alive - we invite you to join us!
As you may know, women-centric organizations are ALWAYS underfunded and I long for a day when that is not the case but...in 2018 that fact remains. I am calling on you to join me in making a gift today. We keep our mission "alive" on a shoestring of a budget by looking for creative ways to add HERstory to HIStory to make OURstory but we need YOU!

On Saturday, September 22, 2018, MWHC hosted a panel discussion on "The Power of the Woman's Vote." MWHC welcomed over 50 attendees to The Meeting House in Columbia, MD.

The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (GSCM) present the 4TH annual Women in STEAM Festival on Saturday, December 8, 2018.
Venue to be determined.
Professionals in the fields of robotics, engineering, biology, architecture, computer science, graphic design, finance, and many other STEM fields will be present and assist girls and adults in hands-on workshops, to learn about exciting STEM careers. Inspirational stories will be shared by the women in STEAM.

Maryland Women's Hall of Fame 2019 NOMINATION PACKET.
Please
CLICK HERE to fill out and submit your nomination documents online for your 2019 Maryland Women's Hall of Fame Nominee.
All nominations must be received by 4 p.m., Friday, November 30, 2018.
2019 Maryland Women of Tomorrow Awards
The Maryland Commission for Women and the Women Legislators of the Maryland General Assembly are seeking recommendations of exceptional young women in grades 10, 11 and 12 for the 2019 Maryland Women of Tomorrow Awards.
The Women of Tomorrow Awards program was established in 1997 to recognize young women who have achieved records of academic excellence, extraordinary community service and outstanding leadership.
All nominations must be received by 4 p.m., Friday, November 30, 2018.

Bessie Baker, WWI nurse, is being honored by Johns Hopkins Hospital on November 14, 2018.
Bessie Baker, was born in 1875 into a large Maryland Eastern Shore family and came to Baltimore around 1898 to study at Johns Hopkins Nursing School. After graduating in 1902, she worked in Baltimore as Assistant Superintendent of Nurses. In 1916, at age 41, she was selected as Chief Nurse for the Johns Hopkins Base Hospital 18, which was the first American medical unit sent to France in June 1917.
