Did you know? Proper oil sampling for analysis plays a crucial role in determining your engine's health.

Used Oil Analysis' object is to examine oil samples from an engine, and break down the sample in parts per million, to determine the internal health of the engine. It is a quick, nondestructive way to gauge the health of an engine.

The levels of iron and aluminum can warn of piston and cylinder wear before a major failure occurs, bearing wear rates can be determined and action taken before the crankshaft becomes badly scored. Fuel dilution, anti-freeze leaks and water entry can be detected while they are still minor problems. The levels of contamination and combustion soot can indicate a restricted air intake system, ineffective oil filters, poor combustion or a rich air/fuel ratio.

It is only with consistent and repeated oil sampling that the health of your engine can be properly determined. We recommend having your engine oil tested every oil change.
The sample to be tested must be collected in the provided sterile sample bottle using proper techniques outlined below by ALS Tribology:
  • Use safe sample extraction methods.
  • Use consistent practices.
  • Use optimal sampling points, choose a representative location.
  • Minimize sources of garbage data
  • Never sample directly from a filter
  • Take samples before the oil is changed or adding makeup oil
  • Have the oil hot and thoroughly mixed before sampling.
  • Always use clean sample containers and equipment.
  • Use well sealed containers so they don't leak after replacing the container cap.

  • Provide required sample information and completely fill out the supplied form.
  • Keep sample bottles sealed and clean for sending to the lab.
  • Keep paper work clean.
  • Send sample immediately to the testing lab to ensure applicable test results
  • Samples are to be taken before the oil is changed or adding makeup oil to the sump.
  • Samples are to be taken after the engine has been running and the oil is hot and well mixed, around 110F.

  • Immediately shutoff the engine and clean around the oil pan drain plug. Remove the drain plug and begin draining the warm engine oil from the oil pan into a waste receptacle. Obtain a sample during mid-drain as the oil flows out of the oil pan by carefully holding the sample bottle up to the stream of oil and filling the bottle 80% to 90% full.
  • CAUTION: The oil may be hot and can cause burns. Wear protective gloves. Do not take the oil sample at the start of the drain flow.
  •  Wipe off the outside of the sample bottle. Allow the new sample to cool slightly before replacing the bottle cap. Seal tightly.
