Look to the Dark as Well as the Light  - In this season of dark, we look to the lights. Many ancient rituals celebrate the return of the light (the sun) to chase away the night. Now in modern times, we know the sun will return whether or not we have a ritual. Still, it is good to gather with family, friends, and community. Also, with psychology now encouraging us to slow down and reflect, delving deeper into our feelings and self, we need this dark period to help us balance the overly bright and frantic culture that pushes everyone to do more, buy more, be more. Too much "more" is making us crazy! Even though we know our candle lighting does not affect the Sun's return it is good and healthy to gather and have quiet time with our selves and with the others. Delve into the deep dark and be whole. It is from here that we can truly let our little light shine.

Our Hanukkah party  was a delightful success with menorah making, prayers in Hebrew and English, dark chocolate gelt to inspire the games of dreidel, and the abundance of latkes. Oh, the latkes were the biggest hit of the day, Thanks go to Sondra for getting us started and being the head chef; Becca, Jasper, Esme', and Alexandra for coming early to come help prep and clean; Ilana who co-led the class with me; Walter who stepped in to help cook; and Peter who stuck with me until the end of clean-up. The group effort was as sweet a treat as the latkes themselves.

Youth & Family with UU Young Adult Annual Solstice Ritual and Potluck, Saturday, Dec 22
- We gather in the Fireside Room at 7 pm to make wish candles for the coming year. After calling the directions, we share our wishes into a circle of caring. Upon releasing the circle there is a potluck with music. We aim to finish by 10 pm. All YRUU families and YRUU graduates are encouraged to attend.

Family Xmas Eve Service  - 5 pm in the Fireside Room - Yes, people really do wear their PJs to this early service. The Dearborn family join Marcus and Jef in presenting this secular celebration with music, story, song, and refreshments. This hour-long event is just the right thing for people not wanting to stay out late. All ages welcome.

Toiletries for the homeless and fire victims - Please bring in your collections of travel toiletries. We will be packaging them up on Jan. 6th.

~~~ Sundays ~~~
Sunday, Dec 16th  - We will all start in the service for an extended Time for All Ages and a ritual with Rev Marcus. We then retreat to the Fireside Room for projects and snacks.
Sunday, Dec 23 - All Ages Religious Exploration - We will explore some of the various meanings of Xmas and its overlapping history with other traditions: Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Greek and Roman Mythology using story, art, and music.
Sunday, Dec 30 - All ages Art, Music, and Movement.
Sunday, January 6, 2019 - Annual packaging of toiletries. A fun and active project for children and youth ages K-12.
May your season be filled with warmth and health, joy and compassion. I wish you all a glorious season of dark, warm, peaceful connection with yourself, community, family, and a time of deeper reflection.
Best Wishes,
Jeffrey
New Name Party & Cookie Exchange
This Saturday Dec. 15, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM we are hosting an event for the community group working to change the name of the Dixie School District. All are invited to come and brainstorm ideas for a new name. Here's what the event organizers say:
It is time to propose new names for Dixie School District! Bring cookies to share.  Enjoy live music by Grammy award-winning cellist, Mark Summer, and pianist Michael Whiteley. Our special guests are Michael Pritchard, youth motivator and comedian, and Noah Grififn.
In January 2019, we will submit the petitions with several new name proposals to Dixie School District Board of Trustees. The Dixie School District Board of Trustees is required by law to hold public hearings and vote on every new name petition submitted and signed by 15 or more registered voters in the district.
Touch of Beauty Sign UP
SO many thanks to the people who have provided us with color and beauty all through the fall. Now is the time to fill the winter slots: Jan, Feb and March. Some of our "regulars" have volunteered already, but we need many more. It would be wonderful to welcome a flower arrangement from a newcomer - or an old timer who's never waded in before! It's easy and fun - Winter arrangements are, by definition, quite spare, reflecting a beautiful shape or texture. OR, if you want color, Trader Joe's or Safeway await with bunches of flowers for less than $10. Please email [email protected] with a date of your choice. Add a second date in case your first choice is already taken.
Many thanks, and happy holidays to all!
 New Soul Matters Groups forming for 2019
We have had a very successful program of 3 small "Chalice Circles," with groups meeting each month during 2018.  The current groups will have their final meeting in December.
We are pleased and excited to rename this program "Soul Matters Groups," and in 2019 we will be using the monthly Soul Matters themes. Now is the time to kick-off new groups for 2019.
Soul Matters Groups allow members and friends to join a group of 6-10 people, lead by trained facilitators, who meet once a month.  There are monthly themes and a structured format that create a space for sharing the things in life that are really important to us, and deepen our connections with each other.  The new groups will have their first meeting in February 2019, and continue with monthly meetings until December 2019.  We recommend that people participating in this program commit to going to each monthly meeting, and make a one-year commitment.  You do not need to be a UUCM member to join a group.
It is easy to sign up for a 2019 group!  Option 1) Fill out the "yellow form" that is in the lobby and turn it in to Dianne Estrada or another facilitator listed on the form, or 2) Send an email to [email protected] indicating your interest and availability.  That's it!  The deadline to express your interest is  January 15, 2019.
WhaleCoast Alaska Tour Information
The Unitarians of Alaska are pleased to announce that the 2019 WhaleCoast Alaska tour information is now posted on their beautiful new website https://whalecoastak.org.
The best part of these tours is that the small group stays with Alaskan UUs and gets a true perspective of this magnificent area through the eyes of people who live there.
They are offering two tours next summer. The National Park Tour runs from June 8-18, and the All-Alaska Tour will take place July 5-17. Both tours include spectacular scenery, opportunities to see Alaska wildlife on land and sea, engaging Native Culture experiences, and warm UU hospitality. Groups of eight or more get a discount! So if you sign up, mention you are with UU Marin.
For complete information, go to https://whalecoastak.org.
