Thoughts from Pastor David...

Greetings, friends,

For many of us, the seasons of Advent and Christmas are filled with a variety of traditions.  Most of those traditions revolve around our families, but we also have them in the church.  This year we will enjoy many of those traditions, some old and some relatively new, such as the Christmas Extravaganza on the 8th, the Children & Youth Christmas Program on the 9th, the choir's Christmas Cantata on the 16th, and two Christmas Eve services on the 24th.  As important as traditions are, I think it is always good to be looking for something new to add to the list.

This year, I would like to introduce the Ornament Exchange.  I can't take credit for this one - a church I served some time ago had done it for many years - but here's how it works.  Those who wish to participate, whether as a family or an individual, purchase a simple Christmas tree ornament and wrap it up as a gift, being sure to include a card inside with their name on it.  When they come into church, they place their gift on the prayer rail.  At some time during the service, those who are participating are invited to come up and take one of the gifts, being sure not to get the one they brought.  Those who are participating are promising to pray for the person or family whose gift they got throughout the coming year.  It's not supposed to be a secret.  I suggest going to the person or persons and tell them you got their ornament, and that you will be praying for them.  That way, when they have a special need, they can let you know so you can pray for them about that particular need.

I also suggest that the ornament is kept out after Christmas and placed in a conspicuous place in your home.  That accomplishes two things: First, you are reminded to pray for the person or family whenever you see the ornament.  And second, guests in your home will see the ornament and may ask why you still have it out when Christmas has long gone.  This gives you an opening to share about the importance of prayer and praying for one another.

We're going to do this on December 16.  We will have one service that Sunday, so all the church family will be together to participate.  I hope you will plan to participate - you will be blessed!

Grace & peace,
Pastor David
CLASSIC CLUB

WRIGHTSBORO UNITED METHODIST MEN

Greetings from the WUMM ,

The Wrightsboro United Methodist Men continue to meet on the second Sunday of every month in the Fellowship Hall for breakfast. And, as usual, women are also welcomed. We eat at 7:30am, have a short devotional, and then conduct the business portion. We are finished in time for those who want to attend our 8:30am service.

At our last meeting on Nov. 11th, 2018, nominations were received and voted on for the upcoming year. We are proud to announce that Darren Poe will be our President, Todd Parker our Vice-President, and Charles Lawhon will continue as our Secretary/Treasurer. Congratulations to all of them and I am sure that the WUMM will continue to thrive. I will continue as a part of the group and look forward to helping in any way I can! The WUMM will once again support a child on our Angel Tree.  This will be discussed more at our December 9th breakfast meeting.
I have truly enjoyed leading the WUMM for the last 4 years and have been blessed immensely! Moving forward, I would like to encourage any and ALL who can join and contribute to this wonderful group.  God is so good and the WUMM really enjoy giving back! What better way to give back to the Church and, most of all, to GOD!! Won't you join us soon?!
God is good all the time!! Keep Looking Up!!
Brad Shoaf-President WUMM

* Also, a reminder to the men of our annual men's dues will be upcoming again in January - see me or Suzanne.*

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH

ANGEL TREE

Our angel tree will be up in the narthex with opportunities for helping children in our community who are struggling this year.  We will have six angels from the Methodist Home for Children as well as a family from our Hand in Hand ministry.  Plan to take a name, or two, and bring Christmas joy to a child who might not have any without you.  Remember that Christmas is all about a child born in a manger; what better way to honor Him than to help these children?  Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful decorations made by our Crafty Friday ladies.

HURRICANE FLORENCE

Much remains to be done in the wake of this monster storm.  Our church has been instrumental in helping people affected by taking down trees, tarping houses with holes in them, tearing down condemned structures, and furnishing food.  But the work has just begun; there will be many months of rebuilding and volunteers are needed.  Please consider joining a work team on Saturday mornings to help someone go back home.  The blessing will be theirs and yours.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

Wrightsboro Church was blessed to be able to furnish 16 Thanksgiving baskets for struggling families in our community.  Each basket was filled with all the necessities for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.  Thanks to the volunteers who came out to help assemble.

CRAFTY FRIDAY

The Crafty Friday ministry made new Chrismons for the Chrismon tree.  The beaded shell symbolizes the baptism of Jesus.  It has three beads added to the edge that represent the trinity.  We also made a white rose laying on a gold star.  The rose symbolizes purity and it also represents Mary, the mother of Jesus.  There is a new chrismon tree topper.  The inspiration to make it came from the trinity in the beautiful stained glass window.

As you view the church decorations, you will see new ornaments and tree topper on the pretty angel tree.  We finished with decorations for the fellowship hall tree.  It has a snowman theme for the children to enjoy.

Nearby is Wrightsboro Elementary school filled with children excited about the holiday season, and educators keeping them excited to learn.  We are thankful for the 84 school staff members.  Later this month, we will deliver a handmade gift for each staff member.

We would love to have you join us at Crafty Friday. Contact Gail Nunn,    [email protected], for more information.

Merry Christmas from the Crafty Friday ministry!

Operation Enduring Love

On behalf of Operation Enduring Love, I want to thank each and every one of you for blessing our soldiers over on the front lines in Iraq. They had such an awesome Christmas in July with the huge boxes of goodies we sent them!  Thank you for always coming through with showing our love and gratitude for the ultimate sacrifices they make each and every day.

To show them that they are remembered, appreciated and loved at Christmas, Operation Enduring Love will be sending iTune gift cards to these same 20 soldiers.  In addition, the Crafty Friday Ministry has knitted very warm toboggans that will be shipped to them.  We hope you will join us in wishing them a Merry Christmas by sending them a personalized Christmas card. Missions & Outreach will be providing the cards - you just need to add a personal note of love, gratitude and good wishes.  I would like to stress that these personal cards will be the most treasured gift that we could send them!

We will have a selection of Christmas cards located in the Welcome Center. You can pick up as many as you want, add your message, and drop them off in the clear file holder on the wall beside the door to Suzanne's office.  The deadline for these cards to be mailed along with the iTune gift cards is December 12th, so try to get them back before then. But if you cannot make this deadline, please give them to me afterwards and I will be happy to mail them out.

Thank you for your awesome support and love for our troops!  May you have a very blessed Christmas!

GIVING MADE EASY

Do you find yourself wanting to praise the Lord by giving back to Him a portion of the many blessings He has so generously showered upon you?  Have you been sitting in the pew when the collection plate is being passed and you realize you have little or no cash and you don't carry a checkbook?  Have you been out of town or sick on Sunday and not sure how to handle your weekly tithe in those instances?  We have all been there.

The church office will provide you a self-addressed envelope upon request, if you wish to mail a check.  But why not utilize the online giving option?  Online giving is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It can be accessed by going to the church website,  www.wrightsboroumc.org, and choosing the red Give button in the upper right corner, or by clicking the link, "click here to give online", in the weekly announcement email. Simply pick the amount of your tithe or offering and where you wish the funds to be applied, check out and you are done.  You can even elect to set it up as a recurring payment to ensure the funds are sent each week without any extra work on your part.

What an easy way to ensure the missions of WUMC are able to continue and grow.  I am proud that we offer multiple options for our congregation, and I encourage you to at least check it out to see if it would be a good fit for you.
