Update: Community Open House Sept. 16
Enthusiastic volunteers met after church on July 30 to discuss a fun community event to be held on Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's essentially a touch of the usual Harvest Festival, which is on sabbatical this year.
We are planning to host a luncheon; and we have booths for home-made baked goods, canned goods, plants, books for children and adults, jewelry, children's art projects, odds and ends, and some clothing.
We will collect lightly used items from church members and friends after church on Sept. 3 and 10 and during the day Sept. 13 and 14.
Here are ways to help:
Bring canned goods, plants and lightly used items that we can sell at tables. On the day of the event, Sept. 16, bring potluck foods to add to our rice bowl and salad lunch, plus baked goods for sale at a table.

African Library Project Sends Books To Sierra Leone Moslem School

Skyland's Missions Board sent 1,459 books for the Makorki Agricultural Islamic Secondary School from the Redwood Estates Post Office in late August. A BIG thanks to families of our local school, the community and the church who donated books in May. A BIG thanks also to our sorters (Shannon Edwards, John
Heyes
, Kathi Larkin and Angela Patterson) and our packers (Deana Arnold, Leslie Meehan and Lisa Meehan). To help pay the postage of $650, we will take up a special collection Sunday, Sept. 10.
In all, the ALP organization will send 500 boxes from 31 book organizers; and in early October the donated items will be put into a container in New Orleans, LA, for shipping by boat. Recently, Sierra Leone has experienced massive mudslides and flooding; but our books will arrive in December, after most of the cleanup is done.

Stephen's Refreshed Return

On Sept 5, Stephen will return from his sabbatical time -- a time of study, refreshment, and re-creation. He has been much missed. It has been a time for Skyland Church members and me to recognize more clearly the many ways in which we depend upon the leadership of our beloved pastor and teacher and guide.
As a church we decided to also take a sabbatical from putting on the full Harvest Festival experience. However, a small group has organized an Open House, to provide a taste of Skyland Church's love for the mountain community.
In the Fall, we hope to spend some time envisioning together. We will consider our role in the community and the world, and our hopes for who can be together.

NOTE from your treasurer:
Report after three months into our new fiscal year.
We participated in the Mountain Jam event, which supports local programs, on Aug. 5. Our participation was primarily concerned with the food booth. The Music and Arts committee decided to use some of its funds to purchase all the food supplies.
First shipment of books to African Library Project was completed. A fund raiser to support the shipping costs will be held later this year.
We are able to accept credit card payments for pledge, general and special offerings if that is more convenient than check or cash. See either Jan or myself after service for these transactions.
