Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Charles W. Graham Coffee Shop to Have Extended Hours This Week

The Charles W. Graham Coffee Shop will have extended hours as follows:

Dec. 3 - Dec. 7 (Dead Week)

12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Friday

 

Dec. 10 - Dec. 14 (Finals Week)

8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (return to regular hours)

Graduate Student Develops Sustainable Building Material from Fungus

Architecture graduate student Tayana Ghosh has developed a new building material that combines mycelium fungus with glass. She believes that a mycelium-glass composite could serve as an environmentally friendly material in built environments, as it requires less energy to manufacture than conventional building materials. To test this hypothesis, Ghosh's research combines  mycelium , a filiment fungus, with recycled fire-glass to make a composite brick unit. Ghosh is advised by Prof. Lee Fithian, with support from Profs. Marjorie Callahan and Shideh Shadravan.

GCA Team Assesses Design Strategies in Zambia

A team of students and faculty from the OU Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) are using photovoice and focus groups to design more effective spaces.  Associate professor of Architecture  Dave Boeck , associate professor of Regional and City Planning  John Harris , alumnus Chris Le, and a number of GCA students from Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Regional and City Planning traveled to Lusaka during the summers of 2014-2017 to help design and assess the success of various architectural and planning projects. For the design projects, the OU team used focus groups and photovoice approaches to identify community desires.

Institute for Quality Communities Partners with City of Waurika

The Institute for Quality Communities has partnered with the city of Waurika, Oklahoma for planning assistance and matching funds through the Oklahoma Municipal League. Over 30 GCA students have been working with the city to solve problems such as walkability, accessibility, parks, empty buildings, and run-down side streets. After two site visits, the IQC is now working on developing their recommendations on how they can bring the city of Waurika back to life.

Society of Urban Design Students Co-Sponsors "Changing Nature of the Suburbs Conference" in Tulsa

Last week, 85 planners, real estate professionals, and civic leaders attended the Changing Nature of Suburbs conference, sponsored by the Tulsa chapter of the Urban Land Institute and the OU Society of Urban Design Students. Pictured above, from left to right, are moderator Bruce Bolzle and speakers Todd Zimmerman, Ward Davis, and David Dixon. It was a great discussion on what lies ahead for suburbs and how we can navigate our changing (sub)urban contexts. Thank you to all who attended!

Student Receives Funding to Work with GCA Professor on Solar Research

Engineering student Pranav Mohan recently received an Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Grant to work with GCA architecture professor Andres Cavieres. Mohan will assist Cavieres with an aspect of his solar research program. The UROP program offers financial assistance for scholarly and creative projects under the mentorship of a faculty member. Dozens of research projects are funded each year so that undergraduates may undertake ambitious and exciting research endeavors.

Cash Prizes! Enter the GCA's Fifth Annual Napkin Sketch Contest!

The 2019 Napkin Contest is now accepting entrees! This annual contest offers CASH PRIZES and is open to all students in the GCA. To get started, pick up your free napkins from Camille Germany, in Gould Hall, rm. 282. The deadline is today, Monday, December 3rd, 2018. Winners will be announced in February, during the Charles W. Graham Travel Study Dinner Benefit. Landscape Architecture Foundation Scholarships Available for 2019

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) is pleased to announce our scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year, with over $80,000 in awards available through 11 different scholarships and fellowships. The awards recognize superior student performance, encourage diversity, support original research, and assist students with unmet financial need. Study Abroad in Italy with "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program

Students who participate in the Summer 2019 "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program are invited to walk the historic botanical gardens of Italy, and learn the foundations of natural history and science with Bruce Hoagland, biogeographer. They will also experience splendid Renaissance villa gardens with Tom Woodfin, landscape architect and garden historian. Together, they will learn the history of beloved places whose beauty, plant collections, and structure continue to inspire scientists and artists

  • The class is based in Arezzo, Italy, and runs from July 8 - August 2, 2019
  • Students can earn six credit hours in two courses: GEOG 3253, Environmental Conservation, and LA 4743, Garden History
