Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.

Thanksgiving
I would add one comment to this lovely and thoughtful piece published by Penn Hillel about the Jewish-American experience and Thanksgiving. The essay is titled "Identity and Gratitude", and has three, brief subsections: Thank, Feel, Do...
You all know the Hebrew word Todah, which means Thanks, but I feel certain that fewer of you are aware that it shares the same root with the name Yehuda, Leah's fourth son. In deriving his name, Leah declared, "This time, I give thanks to Adonai (odeh et ADONAI)". We, as Jews, Yehudim, derived our name and the name of our religion, Judaism/Yahadut, from Judah's name.
That means that gratitude and thanksgiving are embedded and embodied, and intertwined with our identity.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Torah Reading 214    Haftarah 222
VA-YISHLAH

Jacob prepares for the worst as he anticipates having to confront his brother Esau upon his return home. He divides his household into two groups so that if Esau and his troops set upon one, the other might escape. He also sends a succession of valuable gifts to Esau in the hope of appeasing him.

The night before their "reunion" Jacob wrestles with a man (actually an angel) and defeats him. This stranger blesses him with a new name, Israel, the meaning of which is "he who prevails with God".
Jacob's fears regarding his brother turn out to be unfounded. Esau embraces him with affection and offers to escort Jacob's family. Jacob declines the offer; Esau returns to Seir, and Jacob eventually settles in Shechem, a town named by its chieftain, Hamor, in honor of his son.

Jacob's only daughter, Dinah is seduced by Shechem. The only circumstance under which Dinah's brothers will allow them to marry is if all the Shechemite men undergo circumcision. Surprisingly, they agree. While they are recuperating, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, slay them all to avenge their sister's dishonor.

Jacob departs Shechem, journeying to Beth El, the site of his vision of the heavenly staircase. God's promise to him is reiterated and his name Israel is re-confirmed. Rachel dies near the city of Bethlehem while giving birth to Benjamin. Jacob reunites with his father, Isaac. Isaac dies at the age of 180, and is buried by his two sons in the Cave of Machpelah.

The sidra ends with a genealogical listing of the descendants of Esau.

Important Reads
Just as in previous epochs Jews were accused of being Christ-killers, spreading medieval plagues, using Christian blood in wine and matzah, controlling the capitalist system, subverting the capitalist system, trafficking in Palestinian organs, now accusations of apartheid and colonialism are being leveled against us in the guise of delegitimizing the State of Israel. But it is all Anti-Semitism, just by another name. kas

BDS/Anti-Semitism
AirBNB may be wrapping itself in the righteous mantle no longer listing homes in the West Bank, because it is occupied territory, but when they still list homes in Russian-occupied Crimea, Turkish-occupied Cyprus, and the number of other places around the world where territories in dispute, then AirBNB is not just inconsistent or hypocritical, it is anti-Semitic. Anytime the same yardstick is not applied equally in other situations, and to other countries, and the actions taken against Israel are unequivocally anti-Semitic. kas

The story of a family in Nahariya, a small traditional town in Israel, whose lives change after their parent comes out as a transgender woman. Their mother chooses to stay with her spouse through the whole process, but just as it seems that life is back to normal, she takes a sharp turn and shakes everything up again. This is a story about a family that breaks social conventions and a family that changes what we thought we knew about gender and parenthood. But most of all, it is a story about a family that redefines the limits of recognition, acceptance and love of those closest to us.
Q&As with Producer Ofir Trainin Friday 11/23 following the 7:40pm show, and Saturday 11/24 following the 5:30pm and 7:40pm shows.

In the last years of the late filmmaker's life, he devoted a film to four women from four different areas of Eastern Europe with four different destinies, each finding herself improbably alive after war's end: Ruth Elias from Ostravia, Czechoslovakia; Paula Biren from Lodz, Poland; Ada Lichtman from further south in Krakow; and Hanna Marton from Cluj, Romania.Survivors of unimaginable horrors during the Holocaust, they tell their individual stories as crucial witnesses to the barbarism they experienced, possessing a vivid intelligence and a candor that make their accounts both searing and unforgettable. "What they have in common," wrote Lanzmann, "apart from the specific horrors each of them was subjected to, is their intelligence, an incisive, sharp and carnal intelligence that rejects all pretense and false reasons-in a word-idealism." Israeli artists Oded Balilty and Tal Shochat provide contrasting yet complementary metaphors for the spirit of their native country:the prickly pear and the fruit tree. Balilty's somber black-and white
"Sabra Traces" series examines the tenacious, thorny, and omnipresent cactus that has come to symbolize native-born Israelis. Shochat's lush, colorful portraits of fruit trees in bloom and full fruit are shot in the fields, but have been isolated against cloth backdrops and groomed for the camera. Balilty, a Pulitzer-prize winning
documentary photographer, captures his country as it is, while Shochat creates an idealized vision, an Edenic Israel made possible by the character traits represented by the sabra.

Exhibit
Keren Anavy's Garden of Living Images, 2018
Sunroom Project Space
Thru December 2, 2018
Glyndor Gallery @ Wave Hill
Creating a conservatory from paintings and industrial materials, Keren Anavy responds to the late-fall season at Wave Hill in her site-specific installation Garden of Living Images. Suspended from the ceiling, groupings of abstract paintings on translucent Mylar dip into shallow pools of ink and correspond to the changing colors and forms of Wave Hill's plants-especially at the Aquatic Garden. The light shining in through the multi-color, cellophane-covered windows further transforms the space into an insular, imagined environment. With mark-making that incorporates deliberation and the element of chance, Anavy considers the relationship between decision-making and the natural and unexpected processes that occurs in a garden-a cultivated landscape.
