Arboretum Display: Under the Mediterranean Sun

In keeping with the "Gardens of the World" theme of the 2019 Flower & Garden Festival (Feb 20 to 24), this coming year's Arboretum display will capture the age-old charm, restfulness, romance, and warmth of a traditional Mediterranean garden. A country villa will provide the backdrop for the space, and its courtyard garden will be a study in graceful symmetry and hardy, sun-loving plants. Join us for Opening Night, and be among the first to see our display!

Education Center Pre-Design: Public Meeting Tomorrow!

Please join us for a public meeting at the Graham Visitors Center this  Wednesday, December 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  to share your thoughts on the pre-design for a new Environmental Education Center at the Arboretum. Design firm Mithun will be presenting its pre-design research findings, along with building concepts and three siting options. All are welcome to attend!

A Successful Holiday Sale

Last Saturday's Gifts & Greens Galore was a tremendous success! More than 350 shoppers came to buy holiday decorations, stocking stuffers, and other gifts, and helped us raise $13,500 in support of programs and maintenance at the Arboretum. Thanks to everyone who participated, including our amazing volunteers and the wonderful education staff at UW Botanic Gardens! We only have a small assortment of wreaths, centerpieces, and bundled greens still available. They're for sale at 15% to 30% off in the Arboretum Shop; all items are individually priced.

Thank You for Giving!

A special shout out to those of you who donated to the Arboretum during #GivingTuesday on November 27 or who have replied to our Fall 2018 annual appeal. We have received 128 individual gifts so far! Thanks also to our new and renewing members -- including happy shoppers who joined our family during Saturday's holiday sale. All of your  contributions greatly help us on the way to reaching our year-end goal! If you haven't given yet and would like to join us in our mission to preserve and enhance the Arboretum, click the button below.

Elements of Design: Texture

In the latest issue of the Arboretum Bulletin, garden designer Janine Anderson continues our illustrated series on garden design by explaining a key element: texture. She defines garden texture, describes the different texture categories (fine, medium, bold), and explains the visual and tactile effects of contrasting textures in the garden -- using sumptuous photos to get her point across.

Urban Natural Areas Seminar: "Stewardship Required"

On January 30 and 31, our partners at UW Botanic Gardens will host their third annual Urban Natural Areas Seminar at the Center for Urban Horticulture. This year's seminar will explore how to create, design, and manage urban natural areas for the long term through interdisciplinary collaboration, pragmatic stewardship, and the use of best practices.
