WINTER 2020
Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine
Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy New Year from the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. We bring to close a year highlighted by many exciting developments. Thank you for your interest in what we are doing.

This year we are proud to say we ranked #10 in the U.S. News and World Report hospital and specialty rankings .

We have expanded many of our clinical programs to offer multidisciplinary care to our patients. This ensures all patient issues are addressed, often in a single visit:

  • Our Multidisciplinary Severe Asthma Program continues to expand. Under the direction of Dr. Njira Lugogo, we partner with U-M allergy specialists and otolaryngologists to offer a coordinated patient care and education program.
  • Our Interventional Pulmonology Program, led by Dr. Jose De Cardenas, performs state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to manage patients with complex airway and pleural diseases.
  • Our Assisted Ventilation Clinic partners with providers from Respiratory Therapy, Neurology, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation to provide comprehensive care for patients requiring some form of assisted ventilation. The clinic is under the direction of Dr. Philip Choi and currently cares for more than 1000 patients with chronic respiratory failure.

We are excited to announce Michigan Medicine's new 12-story adult inpatient hospital, which will be built adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center on the University Hospital medical campus in Ann Arbor.

When completed in the fall of 2024, the hospital will offer:

  • 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care
  • a state-of-the-art neurological and neurosurgical center
  • high-level specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging

Locating these services together will allow healthcare providers to quickly respond to complex cases and will provide more access to care for adult patients, where current hospital facilities often operate at more than 90 percent capacity.
Save the date for our Michigan Medicine Reception at this year's ATS Conference in Philadelphia on May 19. Details will be sent soon. We hope to see you there.

Please share your comments and suggestions with us, we would love to hear from you - email us at UMpulmcriticalcare@umich.edu . And,  visit our website to learn more about our expansive research, patient care, and educational programs.

Sincerely,
Chief, Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine
The Joseph P. Lynch III Endowed Fellowship Fund

This past summer we launched the Joseph P. Lynch III Endowed Fellowship fund. The fund provides support for fellowship activities, including support for travel and participation in scientific meetings and other educational activities. The ultimate goal is to reach $500,000 for fellowship support. Given the importance of funding for these vital fellowship functions, the division has been providing a 1:1 match for donations up to $100,000. Currently, we have raised $282,000 towards the goal of $500,000. Please consider supporting to help reach our goal! To give, please click here .

As always, we are very grateful for your ongoing support. If you have questions regarding this fund or how to contribute, please contact our development partner, Andrea LaFave at (734) 763-6173 or at ajlafave@umich.edu .
