ENV 5194: Design of Urban Stormwater Control Measures
Spring 2020: Tuesday and Thursday 3:55-5:15 PM

This course will focus on the design of treatment systems for urban stormwater.  We will discuss modification of hydrologic methods for urban systems, urban pollutants of concern, and regulations driving stormwater control.  The semester will be broken out into 12 modules, each focused on a separate stormwater control measure (SCM) or Best Management Practice (BMP).  Each week will include SCM design methods and a discussion of factors affecting SCM performance.  The course will include real-world design projects that are practically focused, helping students to build a design portfolio to improve their competitiveness for private-sector employment.  Course modules will focus first on conveyance systems (filter strips, grassed swales) followed by traditional and newer “green” technologies, including wet retention ponds, dry detention ponds, constructed stormwater wetlands, bioretention cells, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems (i.e., cisterns), green roofs, street trees for stormwater management, and regenerative stormwater conveyance.  The course will involve experiences in AutoCAD and ArcGIS and will incorporate relevant models into design exercises. Contact Ryan Winston for more information.
ENGREDU 7780: Research Design
Drs.  Emily Dringenberg  and  Julie Martin  will offer ENGREDU 7780: Research Design in Spring 2020. The course is designed to prepare students for productive research in engineering education and related fields throughout their graduate experience and professional careers. Research methods are highlighted, explored, and applied within the context of the overall process of designing research: developing research questions, building an argument from literature, and designing a research method—with alignment between these components of research design.Throughout this course, students can expect to develop their beliefs about what it means to conduct quality research in engineering education as well as recognize how to strengthen their own process for designing such research.

Fellowships
FLAS Fellowship
We are seeking graduate and professional student applications for our Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program. The program offers summer and academic year fellowships for students who are pursuing a degree and need advanced training in language and area studies. Fellows receive a  tuition and fee credit up to $18,000  to subsidize enrollment in language and/or area studies coursework as well as receiving a  stipend (up to $15,000 )! Fellowships are open to students in any discipline who are interested in learning Portuguese, Quechua, or another language of Latin America (not including Spanish). Click here to learn more...
Knauss Fellowship
The Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship provides a unique educational and professional experience to graduate students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources.

The Fellowship matches highly qualified graduate students with hosts in the legislative and executive branches of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one-year paid fellowship. Click here to learn more...
Albert Schweitzer Fellowship
Columbus-Athens Schweitzer Fellows are graduate or professional students whose fields of study or personal interests are relevant to the program’s mission. Fellows receive a stipend of $3,000 to carry out an April-to-April community service project of at least 200 service hours, of which at least 100 hours involve direct client contact. Fellows partner with an existing community agency in the Columbus or Athens area and have both an academic and a community-based mentor. Fellows attend an orientation and monthly meetings as well as participate in reflective leadership development programming. No academic credit is earned. Applications are due in February.

Fall 2019 Dissertation/Thesis Write-In and Boot Camp Schedule
The CFAES Graduate Student Support Group is pleased to announce that we will be hosting dissertation/thesis write-ins and a boot camp during the fall semester. Like previous write-ins, this will serve as a quiet space for students to get together to write independently in community. Students may come and go as they wish and are welcome to bring an additional monitor. Below is a schedule of the sessions that will take place throughout the semester.

Columbus Campus Write-Ins

December
Wednesday, 12/04, Location TBA, 9:00am-12:00pm

Columbus Campus Boot Camp
Saturday, 11/16 in 139 Howlett Hall, 11:00am-4:00pm

This boot camp will provide you with a brief overview of how to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely) goals and tips on writing. Each person will be given a post-it and will establish a writing goal for the day. At a break or at the end of the day everyone will go over their goals, discuss if they were met, and identity challenges/obstacles to writing and how to approach them. Lunch will be provided during this session.

Seats are limited and available on a first come basis, we can accommodate approximately 12 people comfortably. If you would like to attend this week's write-in, please email Alicia Baca ( baca.31@osu.edu ) and include the time you anticipate being present. If necessary, a waiting list will be used and students will be notified via email or text when a seat becomes available. Snacks and tea will be provided. Feel free to bring your own food. Scroll down for more information about what to expect.

Come prepared to write! A write-in is only effective for writing if you spend the time actually writing. That means all notes from the literature should be taken and available and all statistical analyses completed. However, if you are not quite ready to write and want to take advantage of this opportunity to work on stats or literature you are most welcome to attend as long as there is space.
