Fitness tracker for cows to help farmers
Australia's Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and agricultural technology start-up Ceres Tag have created a new type of "fitness tracker" to help farmers keep track of where their livestock are and what they are doing.
The new technology, which takes the form of a smart ear tag, produces similar data to those delivered by consumer smart watches, CSIRO said.
Using the device, farmers can track where their herds graze, if an animal has escaped or has been stolen and even unusual movements that could indicate that an animal is giving birth or is sick, CSIRO said.

Dairy Farmers of America opens reimagined cheese store
Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national cooperative owned by family farmers, recently opened the doors of its newly reimagined retail store, full-service café and interactive experience, The Creamery, in Beaver, Utah.
"Whether it is travelers passing by on Interstate 15 looking for an inviting place to stretch their legs, families looking for a unique dining experience to create memories or customers seeking its famous squeaky cheese, The Creamery becomes a must-stop attraction for those of all ages," DFA said.
The 11,250 sq. ft. store, located midway between Las Vegas, Nev., and Salt Lake City, Utah, along Interstate 15, is more than four times the size of the original store it replaces and features expanded retail space, greater product selection and an interactive, educational experience about dairy. The store's interior combines modern, clean lines with rustic touches for a welcoming and natural feel.

Heat stress has lasting effects on dairy cows
If lactating dairy cattle get too hot, they don't produce as much milk, and that can add up to economic losses of more than $1 billion a year in the U.S. alone, according to University of Florida researchers.
This loss easily can double if dry cows - those in late pregnancy that are not lactating - suffer from heat stress. That stress causes cows to produce less milk during their next lactation and also affects the growing fetus, said Jimena Laporta, an assistant professor of animal sciences at the University of Florida Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).

The a2 Milk Co. reports rising demand in U.S.
The a2 Milk Co. announced Nov. 19, at its annual meeting in Melbourne, Australia, an increase in year-over-year global sales and outlined its growth efforts in the U.S.
The increased sales helped fuel a 40.5% rise in total combined fiscal 2018 revenue for company. The a2 Milk Co. posted a 58.5% gain in operating earnings before income, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in its results for the first four months. In addition, the company reported that, in the U.S., it is continuing to build strong brand awareness with a 50% increase in distribution since the end of June 2018. To date, the company has 9,000 stores in the U.S., and sales velocities in both new and existing accounts continues.

John Roy Campbell (1933-2018)
We are sad to share the news of the recent passing of past ADSA President John Roy Campbell, PhD, DSC, DLitt on Saturday, November 17, 2018 in Columbia, MO. He was Professor Emeritus, University of Missouri, Dean Emeritus, University of Illinois and President Emeritus, Oklahoma State University. He served in many ADSA leadership roles throughout his career. Among his ADSA roles and awards were:
- Outstanding Advisor, Student Affiliate Division, ADSA; 1964, 1967, 1975
- Award of Honor, American Dairy Science Association, 1987
- Selected as Fellow of the American Dairy Science Association, 1997
- President (1980-81) and Life Member, American Dairy Science Association
He was deeply involved in founding the Student Affiliate Division and also served three years as ADSA Treasurer and five years as ADSA Historian. Click here for his obituary.
