Meeting Reminder and Legislation Update | May 5, 2021
TOMORROW, Thursday, May 6th at 11am, join us at Goar Park for our first in-person meeting of the semester. Many people, including parents and even educators, think that dyslexia only impacts language arts, but dyslexia also alters the way students learn in other subject areas, including math. Our guest speaker, Nicholis Wagner, will discuss practical ways parents can support students in math. He will talk about word problems, procedure memorization, multi-step equations, handwriting challenges, and more.

Our fall meeting that focused on writing support was an overwhelming success and we know this math workshop will be equally as helpful to parents. Parents are encouraged to bring a chair or picnic blanket and gather at the gazebo - the weather should be perfect!
As you may already know, Decoding Dyslexia Park Cities has partnered with many organizations across the state of Texas in support of House Bill 3880. Several families from our community attended last week's House Public Education Committee Hearing in Austin. DDPC families testified alongside other students, parents, educators, school board trustees, and even a State Board of Education Representative and the Special Education Director from the Texas Education Association (TEA). They all agree that passing House Bill 3880 would clear up the confusion currently associated with Texas dyslexia education and would more effectively serve students. Instead of waiting the traditional week to vote on the bill, the committee voted immediately and unanimously to send the bill to the House Floor.

We have made great progress, but there is still more work to do and we need your help to get House Bill 3880 through the rest of the legislative process.
