Effective July 1, 2018 New York schools are required by law to provide instruction in mental health to all elementary, middle and high school students. The new law amends section 804 of Article 17 of State Education Law and applies to all public and private schools under the jurisdiction of the New York State Education Department (SED). Section 804 of the law pertains to health education, which schools have been required to provide for several decades and includes subject matter such as the early detection of certain cancers and alcohol, tobacco and substance use. The new law adds mental health to the legally mandated components of health instruction.
A School Mental Health Education Resource and Training Center is being established by the Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc.(MHANYS) to help schools comply with the new law. The Center will provide free online mental health training (CTLE-eligible) and instructional resources for educators, as well as mental health resources for parents and guardians, students and community-based mental health providers. QUESTION OF THE QUARTER
Q.
My son has an IEP and is a sophomore in high school. I am not sure what kind of services are available for him after high school to support him in college or if he chooses to work independently?
A.
While in high school it is important to reach out the Transition Coordinator or Guidance Counselor about transition services upon leaving high school. Each school has a person designated to coordinate Transition Services.
New York State Education Department recommends that students in their Junior Year of high school apply for
Adult Career and Continuing Education Services -Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCESS-VR). This program is part of the New York State Education Department and is designed to help people wth disabilities meet career goals. It helps people to get jobs whether the person is born with a disability, develops a disiballity or becomes a person with a disability while working.
Some examples of these servicces include: Job Coaching, Adaptive Driver Training, Assessments and Evaluations, Vocational Counseling and Guidance, etc.
