Nominees for 2020 Vestry
to be presented and approved at the Annual Meeting

Nancy Bruce

I have been a member of St. Bede's since the early '80s.  I have served on the vestry twice, once when John Porter was rector and once when Janice Chalaron was rector. I am currently involved in the following committees:  greeter, Bede counter, reader, Bible Study group, Net Food Pantry and have been active in the Sisters of Bede projects.  I have also served as an usher. I am retired and, in addition to St. Bede's, I volunteer in NICU at Scottish Rite. For enjoyment and recreation I play ALTA tennis, walk/jog, do jigsaw puzzles, solve Sudoku, and read.  I look forward to taking on a leadership role in our parish.

Molly Graves

Molly Graves, a life-long Episcopalian, has been a member of St. Bede's since 2001. Soon after, Molly became a Sunday school teacher and joined the team that brought Godly Play to St. Bede's. Over the years, ministry to the young children of our parish has been very important to Molly. She has taught Godly Play, co-chaired the Children and Youth Ministries Committee, and coordinated VBS. In additional to hanging out with the kids in the Godly Play room, Molly enjoys occasional outings with the Youth Group and regularly learning and growing with the adults in Bible, Books and Banter, the Wednesday evening Bible Study group, and the Just Faith group. On the Diocesan level, Molly has represented St. Bede's numerous times as a delegate to Annual Council, most recently in November 2019. Currently, Molly volunteers as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor and with the ESL Children's program. Molly has been married to the wonderful Dr. Taylor Graves for over 30 years, and they have two college-aged children, Reyn and Anna. Having previously been on the vestry from 2009-2011, Molly is excited to join a strong vestry that is committed to discerning God's vision for St. Bede's and using our resources faithfully to build a strong future together.

Sebastian Barahona Ramirez

I am Sebastian Enrique Barahona Ramirez and I have been a part of the St. Bede's church community since the end of 2017. I was born in Santiago, Chile and a month later moved to Puerto Rico and live there for 8 years and then moved here to Atlanta in 1992. My background has been mainly in automotive and just recently in the past 2 1/2 years have a primary job in the sales and technical support team at Drillco Tools, Inc. in Atlanta, GA, which deals with the mining industry. I am also starting up my own luxury car rental/rent-to-own business along with many aspects related to automotive. I graduated Parkview High School in 2004 and I am currently attending Gwinnett Technical College to graduate with my Automotive Technology Degree and going back in the Summer/Fall for my Business Degree with a concentration in Logistics. I have a brother who is 3 years younger than I. I have no children at the present moment, but do intend to one day with my lovely girlfriend Ashley Ortega. We both belong to this same church community along with the ministry classes CETLA and I was helping Ashley for some time with the children's Catechism at St. Bede's with the children in elementary school. I'd like to join the vestry as I figured my input on a lot of aspects of the church and new ideas can help bring about more members, planned activities, and further enhance the services in English and Spanish with Padre Fabio Sotelo.

Judah Sali

Judah Sali and his family moved to Atlanta in 2017 after living in Mexico for ten years. He joined St Bede's and was received into the Episcopal church in 2018. Judah is an usher and teaches ESL and afternoon confirmation classes. He has served on the Envisioning St. Bede and Bede Plan committees and also enjoys chopping down the occasional English Ivy. Judah is married to Alyssa. They have two teenagers: Lane and Ashley.

The Gourmet Casserole Committee Seeks Freezer Space

The Gourmet Casserole Committee needs freezer space. If this fund raiser is to continue and grow, we need extra freezer space.

Ideally, we are looking for anyone who has an empty deep freezer and would let us fill it with frozen casseroles for about six weeks.

Another option would be if several people have room in their deep freezer for us to store eight to ten 9" x 9" casseroles.

If you can help, please contact Lois Shingler, Fran Snider or Barbara Helms by January 27th.

St. Bede's is a Supporter of this event.
If interested, please contact Molly Graves for carpool information from St. Bede's on the 26th.

"Harriet"
Popcorn Theology
Saturday, February 8, 2020
5:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.
Pizza, Movie and Conversation
in the Parish Hall

We will begin with a dinner of Mellow Mushroom pizza, salad, fruit, cookies and popcorn.

Then we'll watch "Harriet," a biographical film about slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The film was released in 2019 and stars Cynthia Erivo who has been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her portrayal of Harriet. The film has also received a nomination for Best Original Song for Erivo's song "Stand Up." The film also stars Leslie Odom, Jr., Joe Alwyn and Janelle Monae. The story begins when Harriet is still a slave in Maryland and follows her journey as she makes her way on foot on her own, with a little help here and there, to Pennsylvania. We then see her, against the wishes of her abolitionist friends, choosing to make the dangerous journey again and again as a conductor through the Underground Railroad to free more enslaved people. It is a moving, heroic, powerful story.
Rated PG-13 and lasts about 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Following the movie we'll have a brief conversation about where we saw and heard courage, healing, God and Love in the movie, and share connections with our own stories.

The sign up sheet is in the Connect Center. We'll want to have enough pizza and salad for everyone! All are welcome!

The suggested contribution for the meal is $10.00 or whatever amount you are able to pay.

What is Lent Madness?

Lent Madness is a Lenten discipline that offers the opportunity to learn about some of the Saints - God's faithful who contributed to making the Kingdom's "not yet" a bit closer.  It's also fun.  Here at St Bede's we use it as a fundraiser and means of fellowship.  Fundraiser for what, you may ask?  The winner gets to choose!  Whether you choose to participate in the fundraising, the learning, or just the fun, I encourage you to check it out at  www.lentmadness.org   If you want to learn more about how you can participate in the St. Bede's "pool", contact Jr. Abraham (404-633-1407 or jrabraham1953@gmailcom).

Saintly Scorecards (roster and bios of the Saints in this year's competition) - available for $3. To "play" - submit completed brackets with $5 by Ash Thursday, Feb. 27.

Lenten Meditations from Episcopal Relief & Development

The Lenten Meditations are available as printed booklets, daily email meditations and, new this year, as audio podcasts. To have printed copies of the Lenten Meditations by Ash Wednesday, February 26, orders must be received by Forward Movement by Friday, February 14. Orders may be placed by visiting  www.ForwardMovement.org  or calling 1.800.543.1813.

Lenten booklets and other resources including hope chests, pew envelopes, bulletin inserts and special prayers are available.

"Subscribers to our email meditations have been asking for podcasts for the past few years," said Sean McConnell, Senior Director of Engagement for Episcopal Relief & Development. "We are excited this year that we will be able to provide the option of listening to the meditations through podcasts available  on Apple Podcasts, Google Play and SoundCloud. "

To learn more about ordering Lenten Meditations and other materials or planning an Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday, visit  www.episcopalrelief.org/Lent . Supporters are also invited to  sign up  for daily email meditations in English and Spanish and to  subscribe  to the meditations as podcasts.

Readers and Eucharistic Ministers
Needed on Sunday Mornings

I am reaching out to the Body because we need mouths and hands.  Mouths to read the lessons and prayers and Hands to bear the chalice.

We have teams that take turns each Sunday of the month - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Sundays.    The team leader coordinates who does what each Sunday.  Of course, there is flexibility if you are out of town or something comes up during your team's week.  If you join a team, you do not have to read  and chalice.  If your preference is to do only one of these things, we are happy to have you join us.

We especially need readers for our 8:15 services.

This is an important and rewarding ministry.  I believe it is especially important for us to hear God's words spoken through many the voices of our Body.  Plus, reading the lessons and prayers is great experience if you want to work on your public speaking skills.  You don't have to write anything, just read!  We have young and old readers, so I encourage anyone who is interested to prayerfully consider this ministry, especially our Youth Group.

Please contact

Volunteers needed at the NET Food Pantry January 2020

St. Bede's is responsible for staffing the Northlake-Embry Hills-Tucker Food Pantry during the month of January. The Pantry is open 10:30am - 2:00pm, Mon, Wed, & Fri. Staff should arrive by 10:20am and plan to stay until 2:15pm, if needed. If you have worked previously, or if you have never worked but would like to volunteer, please call or email Nancy Ward at 678-592-2276 (nlbward@comcast.net).

If You Need a Name Tag ...

Please let the Parish Office know if you need a name tag. The procedure is simple. Just put a note on the Parish Administrator's desk in the office and by the next Sunday your new name tag will be on the "spinners".

NET Food Pantry Jelly

The jelly supply and demand has balanced out, so we're back in the business of collecting jelly donations. There is a jelly basket in the Connection Center for your jars. Or you may write a check to St. Bede's and designate it for NET jelly. Lewis and Sally Cook faithfully deliver your contributions or purchase jelly as needed. Thanks to all for your generosity.

Welcome to St. Bede's Episcopal Church

Welcome! We're delighted to have you here. You are invited to visit our Commons Area for coffee and conversation after the 10:00 service. There you will find parish life materials to the right as you exit from the church.
Here are some other ways to get better acquainted with St. Bede's.
  • Visit stbedes.org and sign up for the church's weekly email and learn more about the active life of St. Bede's.   Also visit St. Bede's Facebook page, another way to check out the activities.
  • Fill out a visitor information form located on the Visitor's table located in the commons area. Let us know more about you so we can be in touch.
  • Contact the church office, 770-939-9797, to be placed on the mailing list or learn more about the life of St. Bede's.
The Invite Welcome Connect Committee has dinners for our newcomers with some of our "seasoned" parishioners. These dinners help you connect with the activities and life of St. Bede's. If you are a newcomer watch for an invitation to an "Invite Welcome Connect" dinner.
