December 2018 Newsletter
"Note regarding this month's newsletter"
The Stony Brook staff and students are deeply saddened by the death of one of our second grade students. We are truly grateful for the support of one another, the support of families, and the support of the Brewster community. We know that you will understand the content in this newsletter was written before the student's death and we ask you to keep that in mind as you are reading the various excerpts. As stated in our parent letter emailed on December 2nd, we will provide you with an update once we know arrangements from the family. We also understand that routines are essential to children and adults when a tragedy occurs and we are doing our best to keep up with those routines - including the sending of our newsletter at the start of each month. Give your child a big hug and please let us know if we can further support you or your child! We are a Stony Brook community that Cares for Ourselves, Cares for Others, and Cares for our World. Thank you for helping us care for one another.

December is upon us!! 'Tis the season to give to others and be thankful for all that we enjoy. In the past three weeks, I've had the pleasure of receiving several gifts...the ones that only children can provide. I was invited to a birthday party (and I do have Mom's phone number to confirm my attendance). I received a piece of kindergarten artwork that is displayed on my door, and I enjoyed my first holiday card from a 1st grader with the words "Joy", "Merry and Bright," and with unicorns and mermaids to boot. It does not get much better than that! Let's work together this month to help remind our children the joys of giving to others and surprising others with something unexpected. The PTO along with the Brewster Fire Department and Police Department will be conducting toy drives, food drives, and monetary donations for local charities. Help your child be part of that giving spirit by making or choosing something special to give to a family member or by participating in the toy and food drives to help those in need. We wish you all a "Merry and Bright" season and look forward to seeing you at our Stony Brook concert on December 21st.

Literacy News from Rebecca Bunce,
Literacy Coordinator/Reading Specialist:
I’m pleased to report Stony Brook is humming along with the energy of all our Worker Bees growing their Reading/Writing/Thinking brains, learning how to build their stamina for hard work and perseverance. We have all collaborated as a staff in gathering Fall Literacy Data to help us tailor our instruction so we can best strategically meet everyone’s needs. Quality reading instruction is happening in all of the classrooms as our Literacy Routines and Rhythms have been set in place. We all enjoyed meeting with parents at conferences to fill everyone in on your child’s strengths, progress, and goals. Be looking for a tip sheet to come home on how you can support your young readers at home!

KEEP UP THE GREAT NIGHTLY
