Dear All Saints Family,

I am excited that Father Walter Bryan will begin his time with us this Sunday. I also wanted to let you know that there is a poster in the Family Life Center that shows the step by step process the Diocese will help us with as we move towards the next chapter in our Parish. Please remember to support each other and if you have concerns please let myself, a vestry member, or a deacon know. I know that God has wonderful things ahead for All Saints, as we keep Jesus Christ the center of our focus during this time of change.

Jeremiah 29: 11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the  Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Senior Warden

*  Día de los Muertos , or Day of the Dead will be celebrated on Friday October 26th at 6:30 in the Family Life Center.  This is one of the most important celebrations in Mexico and Latin America. This tradition honors loved ones who have departed in a festive atmosphere.  We will serve tacos as our meal.  Come dressed in whatever attire you desire.  We hope to have a Saints Walk as last year and are looking for volunteers to be a Saint.  Afterwards we will gather and have popcorn and dessert.  A sheet is posted in the Family Life Center to note what you can provide for the meal and to get a head count.  We hope to have a lot of children attend.  If you can be a "Saint", please contact Jerry Wertz atjerrywertz@att.net or 704-577-9699.

*  Parade of Tables event took in $5,259.00, and subtracting the expenses, we made $4,614.14.

*  Latino Ministry Support: Every Thursday  our diocesan Latino Minister, The Rev. Miquel Alvarez, will begin meeting at All Saints with a new Latino Episcopal Congregation. They will use our worship space on Thursday evenings between 6:30-8:30 PM. The hope is that 2019 brings them to a place where they will be conducting worship services on Sunday afternoon. This is a ministry of the diocese and we welcome them as their presence makes us all stronger.

Harl, a scholar on Classical and Byzantine History at Tulane University will be your guide. This is a multi-week study and it is not required to attend every session so do not let vacations and other plans keep you away.

*  A Message from Pastor Dawn:  All of my All Saints family is invited to my MCC Ordination service, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, 7 pm, in the All Saints Sanctuary.  A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.  I look forward to you sharing this important event in my life.

Family Promise:  The remaining 2018 date that we will be host to the Family Promise guests are 11/4. Family Promise is a community program that provides housing and support to families that are less fortunate. All Saints is one of the original churches that helped establish this ministry more than ten years ago. We host families in this ministry four times a year at our parish facilities with assistance from the Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Gastonia. There are many ways to support this ministry. During hosting weeks we need parishioners to greet and engage guests, to provide homework and enrichment activities for the children, to prepare and serve dinner, and to spend the night. The other way that parishioners can assist these families is to donate items that our guests need. Suggested items to donate are clothes, detergent, toothbrushes and toothpaste, small first aid kits, hair products, soap and/or body wash, suitcases (both used or new), 10, 20, and 30 gallon storage tubs w/ lids, towels and washcloths (both used or new), bed linens (both used or new), family friendly movies or videos, board games, & craft supplies.  For more information, or to volunteer please contact Marc Dudley at 704-718-4044 or marcdudleync@gmail.com.

Building Use Policy:  Our buildings are being used more and more and we are experiencing more scheduling conflicts with our church spaces. Effective immediately, all rooms/buildings will be reserved and scheduled ONLY by the Parish Administrator through a submission form available at the office.  For planning purposes every parishioner is able to access the Church Calendar, which reflects reserved rooms and activities, on our website ( www.allsaintsgastonia.org) by using the News & Events tab. Additionally, if you are in need of advance set-up for the room or event you are scheduling (night before, earlier than the event, etc.) please take that into consideration when reserving. We appreciate your understanding realizing that this will improve our ability to serve our parishioners and ministries.

Bible Study:  Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis is the book being studied.  Please join us  on Wednesday's in the Family Life Center at 10:00.

* Parish Nurse Ministry:  blood pressures will be taken on the second Sunday of the month  after the 8 and 10:30 services.  Nurses interested in the parish nurse ministry please contact Cheryl Saylor, MSN.

Yoga at All Saints:  Wednesdays  Noon to 1 PM  - $5 (multi-level Beginning )  Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga. (This is the ancient style which is gentle, personal, go at your own pace) Our country changed the ancient yoga into all kinds of fun interesting sometimes not so safe competitive practices .  Our classes are based on safety in movement  and include the healing breathing techniques and stress reducing relaxation.   Judy devoted her teaching to bringing the "real" ancient technique to people at a very reasonable cost because it is so healing and personal.

Saturdays  9AM to11 AM  (multi-level advanced) Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga.  Again, this class is go at your own pace, gentle and personal.  It is a 2 hour practice.   ( if you are athletic or exercise a lot this class may feel like a more thorough  practice)  People come to both classes with physical problems if their doctor approves and modify the practice as needed.  ($7 a class - Half of each $7 fee is donated to All Saints).

The Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson:  Genesis 2:18-24

The Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner." So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,

"This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;

this one shall be called Woman,
for out of Man this one was taken."

Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Psalm 8

1 O Lord our Governor, *
how exalted is your Name in all the world!
2 Out of the mouths of infants and children *
your majesty is praised above the heavens.
3 You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, *
to quell the enemy and the avenger.
4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *
the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
5 What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
the son of man that you should seek him out?
6 You have made him but little lower than the angels; *
     you adorn him with glory and honor;
7 You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *
you put all things under his feet:
8 All sheep and oxen, *
even the wild beasts of the field,
9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *
and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.
10 O Lord our Governor, *
how exalted is your Name in all the world!

The Epistle:  Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,

"What are human beings that you are mindful of them,
or mortals, that you care for them?

You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned them with glory and honor,
subjecting all things under their feet."

Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying,

"I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you."

The Gospel: Mark 10:2-16

Some Pharisees came, and to test Jesus they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Saint Day / Feast of the Week

Henry Melchior Muhlenberg
Lutheran Pastor in North America, 1787

Henry Melchior Muhlenberg is regarded as the patriarch of
Lutheranism in North America.

Muhlenberg, born near Hannover, Germany, in 1711, received his
education in Göttingen and Halle before immigrating to the American
colonies in 1742. Lutherans came to the colonies from a variety
of regional and ethnic backgrounds and tended to build churches
wherever they settled, sometimes with Lutherans of different origins
settling in closer proximity to each other. There was little organization
among these disparate groups until the arrival of Muhlenberg.

Upon his arrival, Muhlenberg visited Lutherans in coastal Carolina
and Georgia before making his way to Philadelphia. With enormous
energy and unflagging patience, Muhlenberg began to call together
the Lutherans, first the Germans, then the Swedes, until the formation
of the first Lutheran synod in America in 1748, the Ministerium of
Pennsylvania. At the inaugural synod, Muhlenberg offered a common
liturgy for use among Lutherans. The liturgy was adopted and became
the essential element in unifying the Lutherans in America for several
generations. Muhlenberg's axiom, "one book, one church," has been a
benchmark for liturgical revision among North American Lutherans to
the present day.

Muhlenberg also recognized the pastoral challenges of organizing
a new church in the new world. In the old countries, the church
was closely allied with the state. Taxes to support of the churches
were collected by the state and Christian education was part of the
curriculum in every school. In the new world, the churches were to
be voluntary, self-supporting associations and education in matters of
Christian faith was to be the concern of church and home.

Muhlenberg's family played prominent roles in the birth of the new
nation. One of his sons served as a brigadier general in the Revolution
while another was a member of the Continental Congress and later
the first speaker of the House of Representatives. His great-grandson,
William Augustus Muhlenberg, was a priest who shaped the Episcopal
Church in the mid-nineteenth century (see April 8).

Henry Melchior Muhlenberg died on October 7, 1787.
