This week's readings
Advent is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of our Lord's nativity. As formal and profound as that sounds, the two words of preparation and expectation clearly fall short of  celebration. This is a time when Anglican practice draws a bold line between getting ready and actually celebrating Christmas.

To say this is countercultural is a massive understatement. By Thanksgiving the lights and decorations were already being hoisted on lampposts and storefronts, not to mention installations in many front yards. The Anglican practice of waiting until Christmas to decorate actually means waiting until Dec. 24 to decorate a tree or hang greens.

St. Paul's is a church that conducts a Lessons and Carols service a week or so before Christmas (Dec. 16 this year), so we bend the rules to hang some greens in our church for that service. We also realize that a goodly number of people can't manage all their decorating Dec. 24. But we also know that consciously preparing without celebrating and intentionally envisioning what is to come without full immersion in a full blown Christmas celebration is what helps make the day itself all the brighter. These practices also render the short season of Christmas (until Jan. 6) profoundly meaningful to those who exercise this annual rite of Anglican restraint.

ADVENT ENGAGEMENT

The Worship Committee is pleased to announce its Advent engagement schedule for this season. This year, we will hold our weekly Advent supper series starting on Wednesday, December 5th at 5:30 p.m., with subsequent gatherings on December 12th and the 19th.

In addition to being a great way to experience Christian fellowship, and taste delicious soup, the supper series will help guide us through our spiritual journey during Advent and allow us to share our thoughts about the season and benefit from the experiences of others.

To help us on our journey, we will be using a discussion selected by the Worship Committee. We encourage everyone to participate in one or more of these events, which we hope will make your season of Advent even more meaningful.

DECEMBER IS CANNED BEEF STEW MONTH

Our Food Pantry needs your help! We are once agin asking our parishioners to bring food to church every Sunday, and we're going to try something new. Each month we will ask for a donation of a particular nutritious food that we offer to our clients.

Please don't forget to bring Beef Stew on Sunday and for the next three Sundays after that. The basket will be back in the narthex and will be brought to the altar for blessing.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS

1982                 56              O come, O come, Emmanuel

1982                 324             Let all mortal flesh keep silence

1982                 640             Watchman, tell us of the night

1982                 72               Hark the glad sound! the Savior comes

HYMN INFORMATION: Let all mortal flesh keep silence is one of the earliest Christian hymns still in common use. An ancient chant of Eucharistic devotion based on words from Habakkuk 2:20, "Let all the earth keep silence before him," it is part of the ancient Liturgy of St. James. Originally thought to have been the work of James the Lesser, the brother of Jesus, it is now believed to have been created under Cyril of Jerusalem around 350 AD. The hymn invites the singer to participate in the mystery of the Incarnation. In 1906, renowned English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams paired the text with a French folk tune titled "Picardy," and the text and tune have been inseparable ever since.
