"The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright  heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting."

May we recommend...
Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly,  by Anthony Bourdain
A voracious fan of chef Anthony Bourdain's CNN series Parts Unknown, I was saddened by his passing. I turned to his groundbreaking memoir to glimpse an early self-portrait of the man and his views of kitchen culture and the world at large. In this new edition, Bourdain's hand-written marginal notes reveal even more intimate touches, by turns passionate, irreverent, and philosophical. A compelling read and a great gift for the discerning food lover. ~ John

An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good, by Helene Tursten
If you've ever wondered how to commit the perfect murder, this book will give you some clues. Much delightful mayhem occurs in these five short chapters, where we come to know the seemingly mild-mannered Maud, an elderly retiree in Göteborg, Sweden. Maud leads a rather comfortable but pedestrian life of solitude, which she will protect at all costs. Helene Tursten, the author of many popular Scandinavian crime thrillers, has shifted gears to offer up this lively and darkly funny tale. It is a pint-sized book that makes a perfect gift. You will never take seniors for granted again! ~ Jane

Everybody's Welcome, by Patricia Hegarty
Everybody's Welcome is so adorable! A charming story that will inspire "everybody" to care for one another no matter the problem. A very timely tale to share with your little ones. ~ Kathie

Varina,  by Charles Frazier
Charles Frazier's novels are worth waiting for. Ever since  Cold Mountain, his phenomenal, National Book Award-winning debut of the Civil War, I have admired the masterful elegance, lyricism, and cinematic qualities of his work. Though more quiet than  Cold Mountain, Varina also takes place in the Civil War era of the American South, and centers on the dark, harrowing exodus of Varina Davis - wife of Confederate president Jefferson Davis - and her family from Richmond during the war's waning months. In tandem with this narrative, Varina's post-war perspectives deepen fundamentally American themes having to do with the issue of race. This book is a gem. ~ John

The Hidden Lives of Owls, by Leigh Calvez
Leigh Calvez introduces readers to eleven different species of owls - animals she considers to be "in the world, but not of the world." Deeper than standard science writing, the book reflects upon the intersection between humans and threatened animals. Humans may be responsible for their loss of habitat, for example, but through citizen science we can also play a part in their survival. Anyone not already enthralled with these majestic birds will be after this thoughtful read. We may also do well to take some of Calvez's new-found owl wisdom to heart: "Take time to sit and observe," and "Be patient. Eventually something will move." ~ Rebecca

The Suspect, by Fiona Barton
Kate Waters is a crack journalist who prides herself on getting great stories. When two eighteen-year-old girls disappear on a trip to Thailand, Kate rushes to be on scene. Fiona Barton ( T he Widow, and The Child) is a stunning storyteller. Her journalistic career has given her just the right experience to make this story terrifyingly real. Every twist of the plot seems very authentic and very scary, tearing the central character between being a parent and a successful professional. ~ Susan

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, by Michael Chabon
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay chronicles the lives of Josef Kavalier, a 19-year old Czech forced to flee his country and live with his cousin; and Sammy Klayman, a 17-year old street-wise teen desperately seeking a way out of his poor Jewish New York City neighborhood. The two forge a unique partnership and together create the fictional masked crime fighter known as the Escapist. While part of this novel is a love letter to the Golden Age of comics, it's Sammy and Joe's relationship through the years of World War II and post-war America that is the most compelling part of this funny and heartbreaking 2001 Pulizter Prize winning novel. A must read.
~ Kiyo

Heart: A History, by Sandeep Jauhar
Even if you're not among the large population of Americans with heart disease or a family history of it, Sandeep Jauhar's Heart, a History is a gripping story. How our heart pump works, and the history of wacky and brilliant experiments into its mysteries that refused to go away, speaks to the broader issue of how science makes progress over time. From the fatal heart attack suffered by his grandfather in rural India to his own heart disease, this cardiologist clearly lifts the fog around the various ways the heart can fail and steps we can take to avoid the operating room. ~ Dave

The Inferno, by Dante  Alighieri , Translated by John Ciardi
As John Ciardi so aptly puts it in his translator's note for Purgatorio, "(A) sane translator...asks only for the best possible failure." In his stunning translation of Dante's journey through Hell, Ciardi does just that, focusing on replicating the style and meaning of Dante's original Italian.  He does away with the floral embellishments of so many other translations. If you enjoy this volume, consider continuing with Purgatorio and Paradiso.
~ Katie

Witch Elm, by Tana French
This stand-alone novel by young and immensely talented Tana French is deliciously atmospheric, masterfully articulate and both an insightful and critical look at lives of privilege. Her stories are wonderful blends of literary and crime fiction and this is just possibly her best yet! ~ Susan
