Labyrinth Worship & Walk
Friday, Dec. 7th, 7:00 pm (Worship)
Saturday, Dec. 8th, 1:00 - 6:00 pm (Labyrinth)
"Walking with the Music of Hope" this year will be a two day Labyrinth Advent event.
On the evening of December 7th there will be a worship service at 7 PM filled with the music of Christmas, carols, and readings. Don Main and Sharon Cooper will be sharing Christmas music on clarinet and piano during the service. The musical arrangements are sure to surprise! The worship experience will begin in a spirit of celebration and move toward a more reflective tone. At the end of the worship service, Introductions and guidelines will be given for walking the labyrinth the next day. (The indoor labyrinth will be not be available to walk on Friday evening.)
The labyrinth will be available Saturday afternoon, December 8, from 1 pm to 6 pm. During the labyrinth walk Saturday, soft Christmas carols will be playing. As we walk with the Christmas music of hope and reflect on the meaning of Christmas we invite all who participate to join us in a spirit of meditation and prayer. Finger labyrinths will be available, also, on Saturday. Pastor Michael Powell will be available at a prayer station in the Fireside Room for anyone who wishes to share prayer concerns.
We want to thank all who have volunteered to help with this event. For more information contact Anni Powell at 503-371-6913.

Reverse Advent Calendar? What's That?
Advent Giving Opportunity
How about, instead of opening a little window each day and taking something out of an Advent Calendar, you put something in? Here's an opportunity to really help out this year and have some fun while you are doing it. Get the kids involved! Ask your neighbors to help out! Or, how about making it a holiday project with your co-workers.
Then bring your box in to church by December 23rd. Deb and Kelly Freels have volunteered to take all the boxes, baskets and sacks from our Reverse Advent Calendars to the Jason Lee Food Bank for distribution.

Open Door Churches News and Notes
Board Meeting:
The next Board meeting will be December 17th, 6:00pm at Salem First UMC.
Open Door Churches Webpage:
Go to opendoorchurches.org to see information about each of the churches and ways you can be involved.
Open Door Churches November Board Meeting Notes:
The Open Door Churches Board meeting was held at Trinity UMC on Monday November 26th.
The guests from Chemawa Indian School explained about the "Red Shawl Dance" that they are sponsoring at the next Powwow on February 23rd. There are 75 participants already signed up for the dance honoring and praying for the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls/children. The indigenous people feel that their missing women are just being ignored as the majority of them are never even logged into the Department of Justice database. Murder is the third leading cause of death among American Indian/Alaska Native women. To present each dancer with a red shawl will cost $36 per handmade shawl. So they need the support of the local Open Door Churches to help raise the needed money.
Scott Berry, Chair of the Youth Council, talked about the need for the Youth Director to become more supported by the Open Door Churches. The two paid positions are now funded by First UMC and Morningside UMC. Pat Gillespie will coordinate a first meeting to come up with a proposal to bring back to the ODC for where the money will come from for the paid staff for 2019-2020.
District Extension Grants: It was decided to divide the pooled money equally between a new Native American Ministry and Las Naciones' Youth Ministry.
More discussion about the closing of Englewood UMC. It was decided to look into having a property management company to do the management of Englewood and its parsonage. The Closing Celebration for Englewood will be on January 27th at 2 p.m.
Las Naciones will be having a children's Program on December 22nd. They are needing toys for about 100 children.
In December, an Open Door Churches committee will meet with the District Superintendent and the Conference Treasurer to continue dialog about becoming a legal United Methodist entity.
The next board meeting will be at First UMC on Monday December 17th at 6:00 p.m.
The Open Door Churches board members from Englewood are Bev Ellis and Vickie Plasker.
