The Future of Anaheim Performing Arts Center Will Depend Upon City of Anaheim's Stadium Deal with the Angels - December 20

This just in from the Anaheim Performing Arts Center Foundation (APACF): "It appears that the City of Anaheim and the Los Angeles Angels have reached a tentative agreement, which if ratified by the city council, would keep the Angels in Anaheim for another 30 years and would allow the Angels to purchase the 133 acres surrounding the stadium including the 12 acres on which we hope to build our center. The city council majority has vowed they would not approve an agreement with the Angels if it does not include the construction of a performing arts center by the Anaheim Preforming Arts Center Foundation." The tentative agreement comes up for approval by the Anaheim City Council at its meeting on Friday, December 20 at 2 pm at City Hall. APACF adds "after 12 years of diligence and determination, the time has come for our voice to be heard once again. We must be there in force to remind the council that there should not be any approval unless and until the Performing Arts Center is included in the final agreement."

Festival of Arts Expansion Plan Includes Multi-Purpose Space

Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach has discussed moving forward with incorporating an arts and performance-centered facility into the campus. Notably, a former exhibitor donated a $1 million grant for the development of a gallery to display art related to the festival.

The state has enacted a law (AB 5) that has a profound impact upon how we employ people--severely limiting the use of "independent contractors." We invite ArtsOC member organizations Board and Staff to attend this free presentation by a labor attorney to learn how the new law affects your organization and a presentation by our state arts advocates leader on what is being done to modify the law. On Wednesday, December 11, 3 pm, Arts Orange County & Californians for the Arts will present:
"The ABCs of AB 5: Can Anyone Be an Independent Contractor in California Anymore?," a presentation by Michael Olsen, Labor & Employment Attorney at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. It will cover what you need to know about the new California labor law about the hiring of independent contractors (including artists).
"AB 5: What Arts Advocates Are Doing to Mitigate the Impact," a presentation by Julie Baker, Executive Director of California Arts Advocates (CAA) & Californians for the Arts (CFTA). It will cover CAA's success in modifying the bill and its pursuit of further modifications.

Sara McFerrin Dies at 95
Longtime Fullerton College Teacher, Opera Singer, Pacific Chorale Board Member & Mother of Bobby McFerrin
|
Sara McFerrin, a former Pacific Chorale Board Member, distinguished opera singer, teacher for 20 years at Fullerton College, and mother of the celebrated singer Bobby McFerrin, died on December 1 at age 95. beloved of Washington DC, died peacefully in her sleep on December 1, 2019, at the age of 95. A service will be held at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church 1231 E. Chapman Ave. Fullerton, CA. Saturday, Dec. 7th at noon.

Call for Scripts: VSA Playwright Discovery Program

Young writers with disabilities and collaborative groups that include students with disabilities, in the U.S. grades 6-12 (or equivalents) or ages 11-18 for non-U.S. students, are invited to explore the disability experience through the art of writing for performance-in the form of plays, screenplays, or music theater.
